About the Role

Responsible for overseeing farming practices—planting, fertilizing, growing, cultivation, pest management, cane quality, and more—for specific areas of land. Provides day-to-day leadership and work direction for a team of 8+ members.

Responsibilities

  • Respect and lead team members to perform work responsibilities according to the company’s Mission and Value statements.
  • Oversee the planning, preparation, and implementation of farming practices and objectives; prepare daily work schedules for farm employees.
  • Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.
  • Train farm employees to perform duties and responsibilities as efficiently and effectively as possible.
  • Ensure farm employees perform at optimum production levels and contribute to overall farm efficiency.
  • Manage farm equipment, including scheduling and allocation between farming areas; communicate equipment condition to maintenance or fleet representatives.
  • Monitor farming expenses and ensure operations stay within budgetary guidelines.
  • Assist the Area Manager in developing and implementing cost control measures.
  • Communicate personnel changes in a timely manner for efficient processing of job and pay adjustments.
  • Review and approve time cards and attendance records for team members.
  • Evaluate team member performance, complete annual performance evaluations, and provide coaching or feedback as needed.
  • Maintain open lines of communication across all organizational levels and foster a team atmosphere.
  • Partner with maintenance, harvest operations, and other departments to ensure effective working relationships.
  • Provide high-quality professional and technical assistance to internal customers.
  • Coach, counsel, and educate team members on company and HR policies; enforce Standards of Conduct and Work Rules.
  • Comply with and enforce environmental regulations and safety rules; adhere to all company and Agricultural Department policies.
  • Evaluate department reports, decisions, and results in relation to established goals; recommend improvements.
  • Attend departmental and safety meetings as scheduled.
  • Perform other duties as directed by management.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of agricultural experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
  • Four-year college degree in agriculture or a related field, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Solid working knowledge of agricultural operations, including planting, spraying, cultivating, pest management, farm maintenance, grading, plowing, water control, harvesting, and equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to function independently, demonstrate flexibility, and manage time efficiently.
  • Strong decision-making skills and good judgment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members, management, and senior leadership.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from team members, internal customers, or the business community.
  • Working knowledge of budgeting practices and computer systems.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports and technical materials.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to present information effectively.
  • Ability to handle and coordinate multiple urgent tasks.
  • Valid driver’s license; commercial driver’s license preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to handle objects or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently required to climb or balance, talk, hear, and see (including distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus).
  • Ability to freely access all areas of the farm, including offices, tractor sheds, and equipment.
  • Ability to operate farm and office equipment.
  • Ability to move or handle items weighing between 0–65 pounds; lift and carry up to 65 pounds.
  • Ability to work varied hours and days to oversee farm operations.
  • Expected to work outside in all weather conditions (rainy, hot, humid, dusty, etc.).

Working Conditions

  • Works in outside weather conditions on a regular basis.
  • Exposure to moderate to loud noise levels.
  • Required to drive a vehicle for extended periods.
