Family Consumer Science Instructor - Miller South 2026-2027

About the role

The Akron Board of Education is seeking a Family Consumer Science Instructor for Miller South. This is a State Teachers Retirement System position, and applications must be submitted electronically through Applitrack. Qualifications - Required

• Licensure: Currently hold a Family and Consumer Science (FCS) teaching license issued by the state of Ohio, or a Career Technical Education (CTE) teaching credential eligible to teach Culinary (L0) or Hospitality (L1) courses, or be eligible for acquiring a teaching license in FCS or Culinary pathways and complete the eligibility requirements based on education and work experience.
• Education and Work Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Hospitality or Culinary Arts with at least 2 years of recent/related work experience; Associate's degree in Hospitality or Culinary Arts with at least 3 years of recent/related work experience; High School Diploma or equivalent with at least 5 years of recent work experience in Hospitality or Culinary Arts.
• Other Requirements: Obtain and maintain all instructional standards certifications, credentials, or designations required by the state for career technical funding; meet district requirements for entry-year teachers; meet State of Ohio CTE Quality Program Standards criteria; willing to attend required third-party curriculum training.

Qualifications - Desired

• Experience: Teaching FCS and professional/employability skills at the secondary level; experience leading and guiding teams; commitment to updating skills and working in a multicultural setting; knowledge of computer hardware and software applications.

Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver learning experiences that advance student learning; show written evidence of preparation upon request; design authentic learning experiences for students; assist in curriculum development; engage community and business partners; use technology to develop student content knowledge and skills; use continuous, authentic, and appropriate assessment and evaluation measures; be flexible, resourceful, innovative, and manage learning experiences; create a classroom environment conducive to learning; develop classroom rules and procedures; provide learning opportunities for students; develop Individual Professional Development Plans (IPDP); keep in close contact with student families; promote and participate in local, state, and national student organization activities; assist students and counselors in developing and modifying plans; work with students on service-learning, community-based projects; provide pathways to further education; enhance classroom instruction by implementing technology; operate kitchen laboratories according to industry standards and business practices; complete necessary reports, forms, and accounting procedures for kitchen and classroom purchases; maintain an inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment; report to and carry out any other responsibilities as assigned.

Benefits

Position is contingent upon successful completion of the FCS content-knowledge exam and issuance of an FCS supplemental teaching license. New hires working under the supplemental license will need to complete at least 2 years of mentored teaching in FCS.
