About the role

The Oregon Department of Human Services is seeking a Family Coach to provide strength-based, culturally appropriate support to families transitioning to independence. This position is a calling to create meaningful change by empowering families to achieve lasting independence.

Bilingual Spanish skills are preferred but not required. If you are bilingual in Spanish and pass the language test, you will receive a 5% bilingual differential pay.

Responsibilities

• Empower families through person-centered, strength-based coaching that recognizes each family’s unique goals, values, and capacities.
• Partner with ODHS programs, community agencies, and local service providers to ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities for self-sufficiency.
• Engage families through comprehensive assessments and collaborative goal setting to identify strengths, barriers, and support systems.
• Work with adults to create actionable plans that align with their vision for stability and success, supporting their journey toward reducing or ending reliance on public assistance.
• Develop individualized coaching and employment plans using a continuum of JOBS activities, emphasizing meaningful participation, skill-building, education, and work experiences.
• Evaluate employability readiness and connect participants to sustainable opportunities by identifying transferable skills, facilitating access to job training, and making targeted referrals to community partners.
• Use motivational interviewing techniques to inspire confidence and persistence in achieving employment goals.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of employment services, contractors, and community resources to tailor referrals and supports for families with varying levels of employment readiness.
• Support individuals experiencing domestic violence through crisis intervention, safety planning, and ensuring access to resources, emergency funding, and ongoing support.
• Determine program eligibility, issue grant payments when appropriate, and collaborate with advocacy and community partners to promote safety, stability, and empowerment.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in a Behavioral Science, Social Science, or a closely related field; OR
• A bachelor’s degree in any field and one year of human services related experience (e.g., providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economic disadvantage, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, or inadequate housing); OR
• An associate degree in a Behavioral Science, Social Science, or a closely related field and two years of human services related experience; OR
• Three years of human services related experience.

• Knowledge of ODHS programs and community resources, and the ability to coordinate services across multiple systems for holistic support.
• Experience working with families experiencing poverty, domestic violence, and/or substance use.

Working Conditions

• Work locations include the community, participants’ homes, and the Ashland Self-Sufficiency ODHS office.
• Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST).
• Frequent local travel for home visits, community visits, and trainings.
• Interaction with a wide range of people, including those who have experienced trauma and may exhibit challenges in controlling their emotions.
• Situations may require quick decision-making to ensure safety.

Background Checks

• A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required.
• Criminal history and background check will be conducted for finalists; adverse results may lead to disqualification.
• Must complete the US Department of Homeland Security’s I-9 form within three days of hire to confirm work authorization in the United States. ODHS uses E-Verify.
• Visa sponsorship is not offered.

Pay

Salary range: $5,193 – $6,904 per month.
