Background

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 28 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC office in Miami has been serving the community since the 1960s. Over the decades, IRC in Miami has provided critical support to refugees, asylees, survivors of human trafficking, unaccompanied minors, immigrant youth, and their families.

Scope of Immigrant Youth Case Work Intern Work

  • Assist caseworkers serving children and their families by helping them with school enrollment, public benefits applications, making referrals, and client advocacy.
  • Aid with research on local community resources.
  • Support outreach to local organizations to help establish partnerships within the community.
  • Manage client case notes and files.
  • Communicate case statuses and coordinate service plans with the supervisor.

  • Gain knowledge of solution-oriented, strengths-based care coordination for immigrant families.
  • Develop skills in trauma-informed, client-centered care.
  • Develop skills in mapping community assets and resources.
  • Develop skills in client empowerment and advocacy.

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Able to work independently and under pressure.
  • An interest in international issues.
  • A strong desire and enthusiasm to help people.
  • Computer literacy – preferably with PC systems.
  • To have access to the internet.
  • To have a valid driver’s license and reliable access to an insured vehicle.

Requirements

  • Must pass a background check.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Minimum commitment of 15 hours per week for a minimum of 3 consecutive months.
  • Submit intern hours on volunteer dashboard.
