Faculty Resident

About the Role

Residential Life and Housing at Saint John’s University invites applications for a part-time position of Faculty Resident. Faculty Residents (FRs) are monks or laymen grounded in Benedictine values who provide pastoral outreach to resident students through teaching, mentorship, and life-skills coaching. FRs model and strengthen honest self-understanding, a capacity for listening to the voice of God, and reflection on one’s existence in the context of community and service to the common good. They assist students in forming communities built on respect for others, respect for place, and openness to diverse ideas and beliefs.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with SJU Residential Life and Housing on the selection, mentoring, and supervision of Resident Assistants (RAs), emphasizing instruction on residential curriculum goals and expectations.
• Connect with each resident for ongoing mentorship and assessment of personal, academic, and community engagement goals and progress.
• Maintain a visible and active presence in the residential community, fostering meaningful relationships and responding to crises and emergencies.
• Teach healthy coping mechanisms, self-advocacy skills, and effective help-seeking strategies.
• Promote community-building through activities and programming supporting student development goals.
• Support character development by teaching Benedictine values, particularly through the conduct process.
• Encourage the use of campus resources for personal, academic, social, and spiritual growth.
• Foster a healthy living environment by supporting community standards related to quiet hours, cleanliness, and space condition.
• Collaborate with the SJU Residential Life and Housing Office, serve on committees, and follow departmental policies.
• Attend staff meetings, retreats, workshops, and campus events.
• Provide regular central office support as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Solid understanding of men’s development.
• Ability to work collaboratively, motivate others, and communicate effectively.
• Willingness to maintain professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
• Leadership development skills and ability to teach shared leadership.
• Flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and on-call responsibilities.
• Alignment with SJU’s mission and Catholic/Benedictine values.
• Computer proficiency in word processing, databases, and internet use.
• Ability to live on campus in an all-male residence hall (bona fide requirement for male candidates).
• Willingness to support Catholic and Benedictine values.
• Valid US driver’s license or ability to obtain one.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Member of the Order of Saint Benedict.
• Alumnus of the Benedictine Volunteer Corps of Saint John’s Abbey.
• Alumnus of Saint John’s University and former Resident Assistant.
• Member of a Roman Catholic religious institute or ordained clergy.
• Graduate theology student.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to move freely around campus and dormitory buildings.
• Lift and carry items up to 25 pounds.
• Remain stationary for extended periods.
• Visual and auditory ability to engage with students.

Travel Requirements

Occasional local travel in support of duties and programming.
