Facility Systems Technician, Mercy Springfield

About the role

This entry-level position supports small and mid-size hospitals, critical access hospitals, small inpatient/outpatient facilities, and clinics. The Facility Systems Technician I provides the necessary skills to operate, maintain, and repair various electrical/plumbing systems, movable equipment, physical plant equipment, furniture, walls, ceilings, and floors. The role ensures a safe working environment and supports an exceptional Environment of Care for Mercy.

This position allows the incumbent to learn operations for HVAC, refrigeration systems, plumbing, electricity, work practices, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements for respective equipment. It also provides an opportunity to learn the proper use of basic tools and equipment necessary to maintain and troubleshoot HVAC and refrigeration systems.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, and electrical systems.
• Operate and troubleshoot boilers and related equipment.
• Perform carpentry, painting, and general facility maintenance.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for equipment and systems.
• Utilize customer service and communication skills to interact with staff and stakeholders.
• Read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and specifications.
• Perform calculations for testing, installation, measurement, estimation, and repair of equipment.
• Prioritize work assignments and manage time and materials efficiently.
• Complete work assignments with high quality and cost efficiency.
• Use computer software such as Outlook, TMS, and/or Nuvolo.

Requirements

• Valid Driver’s License (required for all Mercy locations).
• High Pressure Boiler Operators License (required for Mercy Arkansas Hospitals, administered by Arkansas Dept. of Labor and Licensing where boilers are installed).
• Class II Boiler Operator’s License (required for Mercy OKC Hospital, administered by Oklahoma City or Oklahoma Dept. of Labor where boilers are installed).
• Class C Tank Operator Training and Certification (required for all Mercy locations; must achieve within 90 days of employment).
• Fire door maintenance training program with certificate of completion (required prior to advancing to Facility Systems Technician II).
• UL fire stop training with certificate of completion (required prior to advancing to Facility Systems Technician II).
• Oral and written communication skills to follow instructions and interact with customers.
• Ability to read and understand technical manuals.
• Numerical ability for calculations related to testing, installation, measurement, estimation, and repair.
• Ability to prioritize work assignments and conceptualize finished products.
• Form perception for measuring and installing parts and equipment.
• Spatial ability to understand blueprints and specifications.
• General manual dexterity, basic math knowledge, and mechanical aptitude.
• Ability to achieve favorable results on both oral and written competency exams prior to advancing to Facility Systems Technician II.

Qualifications

Minimum

• Entry-level position; no formal education required.
• Preference for 1 or more years of commercial experience with HVAC, boilers, or refrigeration equipment.

Preferred

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 2 or more years of training in a Technical or Vocational School.
• Boiler, HVAC, Refrigeration, Electrical, and/or Plumbing licensure.
• 1 or more years of experience as a maintenance technician in a healthcare, educational, or industrial setting.
• EPA-approved Universal Certification for handling refrigerants.
• Training to NFPA 80 regulations for fire door inspection and maintenance.
• Training to UL standards for fire stopping.
• ASSE 6040 training for medical gas maintenance.
