About the role

The Facility Maintenance Technician - Mechanical Trades - Boiler & Steam Operator position is responsible for the proper operations, maintenance, and repair of the steam and hot water producing and distribution plant at NCCU. This position oversees all steam and steam-driven equipment on campus, including boilers, generators, fuel systems, chemical treatment systems, and various piping systems.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the proper operation, maintenance, and repair of the steam and hot water producing and distribution plant.
  • Oversee all steam and steam-driven equipment on campus, including boilers, generators, fuel systems, chemical treatment systems, and various piping systems.
  • Monitor and inspect systems constantly to avoid malfunctions and ensure equipment operates within set operation ranges.
  • Perform valve, pump, and pipe repair, gauge calibration, boiler repair and operation, chemical analysis, precision measuring, system controls, hydrostatic testing, troubleshooting, and problem solving.
  • Support after-hours emergency response for on-call personnel.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification.

  • Working knowledge of plumbing systems, boiler operations, and applicable state and local regulations.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate complex work requirements from oral instructions, blueprints, sketches, and technical drawings.
  • Ability to plan and layout work from rough sketches and verbal instructions.
  • Skill in using electrical metering devices, diagnostic equipment, and maintenance tools.
  • Knowledge and ability to assist with planning, coordinating, and overseeing the work of others.
  • Working knowledge of Banner or equivalent enterprise systems and Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel).
  • Ability to monitor budgets and track expenditures.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, take initiative, and complete projects and assignments through completion.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in problem-solving.
  • Ability to work weekends and special events as needed to support university operations.

Skills

Working knowledge of program theory, techniques, practices, and procedures applicable to facility maintenance and building systems operations.

  • Knowledge of the assigned program area, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and boiler system operations.
  • Knowledge of applicable State and Federal rules and regulations governing safety, environmental compliance, and facility operations.
  • Knowledge of agency and University practices, procedures, and operational principles related to facilities management, preventive maintenance, and work order systems.
  • Knowledge of building automation systems and mechanical system integration.
