About the Role

Performs a variety of building and grounds maintenance activities in support of Town facilities, including Town facilities, cemeteries, parks, buildings, and grounds. Work involves both building maintenance (minor carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, and related repairs) and grounds activities (turf maintenance, plant installation, mowing, pesticide application, and related tasks). The role requires public contact to address complaints, resolve problems, and handle service requests while adhering to safety protocols to prevent injury. Employees may be exposed to hazards such as extreme weather, noise, moving mechanical parts, chemicals, and atmospheric conditions, and may be subject to OSHA’s bloodborne pathogens standards.

Responsibilities

  • Performs landscape maintenance, including turf management, plant installations, mowing, trimming, mulching, watering, and fertilizing.
  • Participates in facility and cemetery maintenance, such as backfilling sinking graves, removing trash/debris, changing light bulbs, moving furniture, installing decorations, and servicing lawn equipment.
  • Inspects cemeteries and facilities for safety and maintains records for liability purposes.
  • Performs semi-skilled maintenance (carpentry, electrical, plumbing) to ensure operational adherence.
  • Operates grounds maintenance equipment, including mowers, trimmers, saws, and blowers.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, with less than 2 years of experience in building construction, grounds, or facility maintenance (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year, a NC Commercial (County/Municipal) Ground Applicator’s Pesticide License, with H & L Subcategories (cemeteries, parks, turf, and rights-of-way).
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Skills & Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in grounds and facility maintenance.
  • Considerable knowledge of work hazards and safety standards related to facility and grounds maintenance.
  • Some knowledge of horticultural design and installations.
  • Considerable knowledge of cleaning chemicals and pesticide application.
  • Skill in operating equipment and tools used in the role.
  • Ability to assign, supervise, and instruct subordinates in proper work and safety methods.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and subordinates.
  • Ability to use chemicals and pesticides in compliance with State regulations.
