Facilities Technicians
About the role
The City of Palo Alto seeks two Facilities Technician positions within the Public Works Department Public Services Division. These roles require journey-level HVAC experience and are represented by Service Employee International Union (SEIU).
Responsibilities
- Perform technically complex facilities maintenance duties, including troubleshooting HVAC systems, electrical, and electronic controls.
- Manage work orders using a computerized maintenance management system, including scheduling, recording costs, labor hours, and work descriptions.
- Install, repair, and maintain HVAC, electrical, and auxiliary equipment in various city facilities.
- Troubleshoot and repair HVAC mechanical/electrical malfunctions through functional tests, visual inspections, and other diagnostic methods.
- Assess, organize, prioritize, and plan work orders independently, exercising judgment and responsibility.
- Work around construction and operating equipment, and handle hazardous activities such as electricity and heights.
- Communicate effectively to exchange information and interact with customers as needed.
Requirements
- Sufficient education, training, and/or work experience to demonstrate journey-level HVAC experience, including completion of an apprenticeship program or HVAC trade school.
- Four years of journey-level experience in commercial, industrial, or large facility environments, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing building equipment.
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
- Possession of an EPA Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certificate.
Qualifications
- High school graduate or GED preferred.
- Experience with electrical, plumbing, or HVAC trades.
- Experience prioritizing and scheduling work orders.
- Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS).
Skills
- Proficiency in HVAC systems, including chillers, AC compressors, boilers, pumps, motors, and electric and electronic controls.
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair HVAC mechanical/electrical malfunctions.
- Effective verbal communication skills.
- Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS).

Pay
The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $90,000 annually, depending on qualifications and experience. Exact pay will be determined based on the successful candidate's qualifications and performance.
Schedule
Hours are flexible and may vary based on the needs of the department. Shifts may include evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
