About the Role

Ultium Cells is a joint venture lithium-ion automotive battery cell manufacturing plant between LG Chem and General Motors. This new, high-technology facility will feature the latest battery cell manufacturing technology, representing a commitment of over $2.3 billion. The plant will produce battery cells for General Motors' North American electric vehicle applications.

The Project Engineer is responsible for coordinating project elements including engineering design, quality planning, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, and final buy-off phases, ensuring the project remains within budget to meet customer needs. This role involves working on multiple phases or sub-tasks of projects with moderate complexity, under general supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate all project elements including engineering design, quality planning, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, and final buy-off phases.
  • Manage the project within budget and plan project requirements and resources, including sourcing sub-contract elements.
  • React promptly and effectively to changing client and product needs.
  • Anticipate potential project risks, identifying and establishing corrective actions.
  • Produce deliverables on-time to customer requirements and clarify these requirements as needed.
  • Define customer specifications into departmental actions or sub-contractor orders.
  • Accurately record costs for any changes in specifications.
  • Analyze customer and internal changes, including feasibility studies.
  • Track project scope changes and participate in relevant meetings.
  • Participate in Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEAs), quality history reviews, robustness studies, and safety MOC meetings.
  • Track tasks against the project timing plan and assist with design verification and G-Comply sign-off process.
  • Apply specific technical skills to support colleagues and travel to other Ultium sites and suppliers as needed.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement activities and perform quality control reviews.
  • Write reports and present progress at project meetings.
  • Conduct benchmarking studies to determine best practices and future trends.
  • Plan projects or subtasks for tracking and presentation, and manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Attend multi-functional group meetings to support business needs.
  • Perform root cause analysis and resolve problems.
  • Support the safety PSM program for covered processes.
  • Lead and/or support technicians and trainee engineers, and train people within the work group.
  • Work and communicate with internal departments, contractors, and suppliers.
  • Comply with Health, Safety, and Environmental Policies.
  • Engage in self-management, demonstrating assertiveness, optimism, resilience, and collaboration.

Requirements

  • Relevant manufacturing/engineering degree preferred.
  • Good understanding of engineering principles with a mechanical, electrical, electronic, or software background.
  • Proven Project Engineering/Project Management experience.
  • Advanced Microsoft user, including Project and Excel software.
  • Experience in creating project plans in Microsoft Project.
  • Experience with Bill of Material (BOM) structures.
  • Understanding of legislation and standards, Lean Manufacturing, and design/production costs (waste, downtime, scrap, re-work).
  • Good understanding of customer expectations and deliverables, with awareness of the impact of failure/cost of poor quality.

Employee may be exposed to or working with hazardous materials and/or hazardous waste. Upon hire, employees will receive initial environmental training over RCRA, SWPPP, SPCC, and emergency escalation. Annual refresher training will be completed thereafter.
