Job Duties
- Pipefitting and welding: (70%)
- Installs and repairs and maintains all welded piping systems and components.
- Reviewing blueprints and technical drawings.
- Installing, repairing and replacing piping and components.
- Making measurements and cutting pipes using hand and power tools.
- Inspecting and identifying leaks.
- Installing, certifying, repairing, replacing and performing preventative maintenance on piping systems and equipment (e.g., meters, valves, piping).
- Troubleshooting and resolving piping system issues (e.g., pressure, temperature, leaks).
- Performing preventive maintenance tasks.
- Performing equipment installations (e.g., fans, pumps, heat exchangers, trapping stations, valving, and welded piping systems).
- Addressing customer queries.
- Cleaning the work area after work completion.
- General Duties (30%):
- Technical Support:
- Ensures areas are in compliance with applicable codes.
- Documents regulatory compliance tests.
- Inspects and tests installations and repairs to ensure they meet quality standards.
- Becomes knowledgeable of equipment and utilities and transfers that knowledge to other staff.
- Troubleshoots and resolves field problems.
- May assist lower-level technicians.
- Locates, identifies, disables and enables local utility shut-offs.
- Updates building drawings.
- Participates on emergency response teams.
- Communication / Record Keeping:
- Documents labor, materials and work performed on work orders.
- Sets up and submits material and equipment purchase requests (e.g., eRequests, eMaterials).
- Provides feedback on materials.
- Creates estimates for small projects.
- Informs customers when tasks are completed.
- Communicates and initiates work order escalation, if needed.
- Other Department Duties:
- Participates in professional development/continuing education activities: obtaining and maintaining required certifications, soft skill development, etc.
- Participates in meetings, trainings, and orientations.
- Participates on emergency response teams.
- Interacts with and assists other areas and staff within the department.
- May participate on committees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Read, understand and update blueprints, schematics and as built drawings.

- Locate, disable and enable electrical disconnects and plumbing shut-offs.
- Instruct others to perform a task, provide guidance and expert advice about technical systems or processes.
- Welding Brazing and soldering.
- Cut and thread pipe.
- Hydrostatic testing of installed pipe systems.
- Problem solving/Troubleshooting.
- Time management Conflict management (e.g. handle complaints, identifying issues and negotiate with others).
- Basic computer (e.g., data entry, data retrieval, electronic communication, internet searches, navigate and retrieve information from websites).
- Customer service (e.g. demonstrate empathy, meet quality standards, actively look for ways to help others).
- Knowledge of: Ohio plumbing code (e.g. fittings, water supply systems, sanitary drainage systems, waste, stacks-vents, traps, piping and storage systems).
- Planning and prioritizing work, resource management, troubleshooting mechanical systems, boiler operation fundamentals, ac/dc theory, relationship of preventive maintenance and equipment life cycle, steam system fundamentals (e.g., condensate, temperature and pressure relationships, flow, regulation and uses).
- A high school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience; two years’ experience in maintenance, pipefitting and/or welding trade and related equipment or equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Efficient skills and knowledge in using pipefitting and welding tools and equipment.
- A basic understanding of plumbing code compliance.
- A knowledge of piping components (i.e. types of valves, fittings, types of piping).
- A valid driver’s license.
- Successful completion of probationary period.
- A valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card.
- An associates/technical degree or vocational certificate in skilled trades/maintenance related field;
- A boiler operator’s license (e.g., low pressure, high pressure);
- A valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card.
- A valid AWS Certified Welder certificate desired;
- A boiler operator’s license (e.g., low pressure, high pressure);
- A basic understanding of university building design standards (BDS) related to the maintenance and repair of building systems and equipment;
- A basic understanding of the project process as managed by FOD Design and Construction.
- Must be able to push and pull 70 lbs. and distinguish colors.
- Climb and stand on ladders for extended periods of time.
- May work in hot, cold, dusty, or dirty environments for an extended period of time.
- May work in cramped spaces.
