About the role
The Facilities Manager for the College of Natural Sciences (CNS) oversees the maintenance and renovation of approximately 2.7 million square feet of laboratory, office, and classroom spaces for 14 departments across 18 buildings. Key responsibilities include ensuring safety, managing repairs, installing and maintaining lab equipment, and collaborating with the Environmental Health and Safety department.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and oversee repair of equipment purchased by the College of Natural Sciences.
- Perform filter changes, CO2 back-up cylinder installations, and monitor system testing.
- Install and maintain monitoring systems, perform decontamination, and dispose of -80 freezers.
- Assist department staff with troubleshooting, testing, and maintenance activities of various lab equipment.
- Coordinate with physical plant to schedule projects and minimize impact on ongoing work.
- Conduct building/lab walk-throughs to identify unsafe practices and hazardous materials.
- Work with Environmental Health and Safety to resolve issues and promote safety.
- Inspect classrooms and public assembly areas for compliance with NFPA standards and ADA guidelines.
- Decontaminate and prepare lab equipment for safe handling when moving.
- Enter work requests and track workflow progress with physical plant.
- Supervise student workers and ensure they are trained in safety.
- Attend various trainings and attend construction/renovation meetings.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree with at least two (2) years of work experience coordinating building maintenance and renovation projects, or a high school diploma with at least six (6) years of experience.
- Ability to identify hazards and mitigate safety issues in a laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of electrical codes, mechanical fasteners, and connections.
- Ability to inspect public assembly areas and comply with NFPA standards and ADA guidelines.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and operate with self-direction.
- Knowledge of decontaminating laboratories and disposing of lab equipment.
- Completion of OSHA 10 Construction training, HAZWOPER training, and UMass Environmental Health and Safety courses.
Qualifications
- Completion of an unrestricted Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License.
- Trade experience or knowledge in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or Hazmat.
Skills
