About the role

The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic, Carpentry performs journey-level carpentry, metalworking, and general facilities maintenance to support the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of university buildings and infrastructure. Working independently under general supervision, the incumbent completes preventive maintenance, repairs, renovations, and construction projects while utilizing computerized maintenance management systems to document work and support operational planning.

Responsibilities

  • Perform journey-level carpentry, metalworking, and general facilities maintenance, repair, renovation, and construction work on university buildings and infrastructure.
  • Install, maintain, and repair building components including doors, windows, cabinetry, flooring, drywall, roofing, ceilings, partitions, and structural fixtures.
  • Fabricate, install, and repair sheet metal components and perform welding, machining, and metal fabrication as required.
  • Complete preventive maintenance, inspect facilities and equipment, diagnose problems, and complete repairs in compliance with building and safety codes.
  • Estimate labor, materials, and project timelines while reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Respond to routine service requests and emergency maintenance situations to minimize operational disruptions and protect campus assets.
  • Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to document work, maintain records, research specifications, and track completed assignments.
  • Collaborate with other trades, contractors, and Facilities Development & Operations staff to complete maintenance and construction projects.
  • Operate and maintain hand and power tools, vehicles, lifts, forklifts, welding equipment, and other specialized equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain safe work practices, train and provide guidance to semi-skilled staff, maintain inventory and work areas, and participate in required training and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

Four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in facility repair and maintenance, or any reasonable equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities maintenance mechanic which demonstrates the achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program.

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations. Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.
