Facilities Electrical & Electronic Systems Technician

Job Duties

  • Performs Three of Five Technical Specialties (55%):
    • Branch Circuitry: Installs and reroutes electrical raceway, responds to and analyzes local electrical outages, installs, repairs and replaces branch circuits and associated components.
    • Electronic Systems: Installs, repairs and replaces nurse call system components, installs, repairs and replaces electronic systems and related components, installs, repairs and replaces pneumatic system electronic components.
    • Electrical Distribution Systems: Installs, repairs/replaces energized electrical distribution system components, performs work on de-energized systems, performs advanced troubleshooting/ root cause analysis of electrical distribution system.
    • Pneumatic Transport Systems: Installs, repairs/replaces pneumatic tube system components, installs, repairs/replaces waste flow system components.
    • Fire Alarm Systems: Responds to fire alarm system alerts, disables, enables, and replaces fire alarm system components, installs, repairs/replaces smoke evacuation systems.
  • Mentorship (20%): Leads team of technicians, mentors and trains technicians, facilitates on-the-job training, coordinates work performed in assigned area, leads projects.
  • General Duties (25%): Ensures areas are in compliance with applicable codes, documents regulatory compliance tests, facilitates building walk-throughs with key stakeholders, inspects and tests installations and repairs to ensure they meet quality standards, becomes knowledgeable of equipment and utilities and transfers that knowledge to other staff, updates building drawings, locates, identifies, disables and enables local utility shut-offs, generates permits, troubleshoots and resolves field problems, participates on emergency response teams.

  • Ability to: read, understand and update blueprints, schematics and as built drawings, read, understand and apply safety standards and practices, read, interpret and apply technical manuals and systems specifications, learn technical skills and apply new knowledge to solve problems, use resistance and power equations to solve problems, use hand, power and machine tools, locate, disable and enable electrical disconnects and plumbing shut-offs, establish and maintain interpersonal relationships, maintain a clean and safe work environment, add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers; calculate fractions, decimals and percentages; use algebra, geometry and trigonometry, instruct/teach others, assist with the development of training classes, coach and develop others, provide guidance and expert advice about technical systems or processes, estimate the resources required to perform a task, manage small projects with defined scope and timeline, perform quality control analysis/evaluate service quality or system performance.

Skills

  • Problem solving and systems analysis, troubleshooting systems (e.g., branch circuit, electric distribution, electronic, fire alarm pneumatic transport), conflict management (e.g. handle complaints, identify issues and negotiate with others), basic computer (e.g., data entry, data retrieval, electronic communication, internet searches, navigate and retrieve information from websites, create basic reports using Microsoft Word, format, analyze, sort and filter data using spreadsheet software), customer service (e.g. demonstrate empathy, meet quality standards, actively look for ways to help others), planning and prioritizing work, resource management, team building.

Knowledge of

  • AC/DC theory, electrical concepts used in Ohm’s Law, electric and electronic controls, PLCs, pneumatic transport system design and operation, electrical distribution system design and operation, relationship of preventive maintenance and equipment life-cycle.

Minimum Classification Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience, two years’ experience in electrical or electronic systems with a minimum of one year analyzing, troubleshooting and repairing electronic equipment and circuits, electrical and electronic logic circuits and/or computer hardware, software, and microprocessor controlled equipment or equivalent combination of education and experience, obtain the following during probationary period: valid OSHA 30-hour General Industry Safety and Health card, basic understanding of university building design standards (BDS) related to the maintenance and repair of building systems and equipment, basic understanding of the project process as managed by FOD Design and Construction, successful completion of probationary period includes demonstrated competence in at least three of the following technical specialties as determined by the needs of the department: branch circuity, electronic systems, electrical distribution systems, pneumatic transport systems, and fire alarm systems.

Desired Qualifications

  • Associates/technical degree or certificate in skilled trades/maintenance related field.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to push and pull 70 lbs. and distinguish colors, climb and stand on ladders for extended periods of time, work in hot, cold, dusty, or dirty environments for an extended period of time, work in cramped spaces.
