Facilities Designer

Responsibilities

• Provide expertise and leadership in the development and implementation of campus and project design.
• Serve as subject‑matter expert for project development, design implementation, and FF&E management, ensuring compliance with the University’s Campus Guidelines and Master Plan.
• Support facility‑specific and campus‑wide planning practices that align with the university’s academic mission.
• Participate in project scoping, budgeting, and scheduling for renovations and new construction.
• Oversee feasibility and programming studies to ensure projects meet the university’s mission and vision.
• Manage professional services of consultants and vendors for planning initiatives.
• Oversee FF&E selection, procurement, and installation for identified projects.
• Create design concepts, space plans, and test fits.
• Review and advise on schematic design, design development, and construction documents from concept to completion, recommending cost‑effective changes.
• Partner with project planners, managers, facility managers, and engineers on facility design.
• Evaluate campus space and make enhancement recommendations, including FF&E and architectural planning.
• Track and document projects using project‑management information software.
• Communicate regularly with supervisors and stakeholders.
• Ensure projects comply with the Master Plan and Campus Guidelines.
• Assist with creation and management of the university’s Master Plan and Campus Guidelines.
• Coordinate regular campus‑partner meetings for current and future project planning.
• Monitor, coordinate, and report project details to facilitate successful hand‑off to construction teams.
• Coordinate with in‑house project managers, estimators, consultants, and contractors as needed.
• Lead process‑improvement initiatives.
• Create graphics and narratives for project visioning and related planning purposes.
• Collaborate with departmental staff to ensure project success.
• Adhere to key performance indicator (KPI) metrics to achieve departmental goals.
• Support emergency response initiatives.

Qualifications

• Degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or a closely related field (formal 4‑year degree or equivalent specialized training).
• Minimum of three (3) years of directly related experience.
• Education may be accepted in lieu of experience.
• Preferred experience: planning or project‑manager role in higher education, commercial interior/architectural design, K‑12 school districts, real estate, or other commercial settings.
• Professional certification or licensure as a Registered Interior Designer, Engineer, or Architect in the State of Texas.
