Job Summary

Fabricator / Welding Technician is responsible for reading blueprints, taking measurements, and determining the best welding method for each job, and setting up components as needed.

Essential Functions of the Job

  • Plans and coordinates with Supervisor/Manager details of work order procedures; gathers required tools and materials based on instructions and specifications provided for the job.
  • Repairs and fabricates various items and equipment using cutting and welding techniques and equipment.
  • Prepares, assembles, and tacks weld parts and surfaces to be welded.
  • Maintains, organizes, and cleans equipment and the work area.
  • Notifies supervisor when faulty equipment or defective materials are discovered.
  • Interacts with coworkers to effectively complete tasks.
  • Participates in project team meetings on an as-needed basis.

Key Accountabilities

  • Safety: Adheres to all plant safety rules, reports all near misses and accidents to the production supervisor and/or HR representative, serves an active role in plant safety programs, participates in monthly safety inspections, and reports any potential safety hazards to the safety committee or management.
  • Quality: Adheres to all Quality Assurance System guidelines, follows SOP’s and SSOP’s (standard operating procedures and sanitation standard operating procedures) when making processing adjustments, ensures compliance with GMP’s, HACCP, and SQF programs, identifies all critical control points (CCP), understands their functions, and relates to the process, accurately prepares and maintains processing area documentation, writing legibly and completely filling out all documents, ensuring the operator's name is signed on each document used.
  • Maintenance: When maintenance is occurring in your work area, it is the expectation to assist the Maintenance Technicians in any capacity needed to expedite the repair process. When equipment is in a state of disrepair, these items must be reported ASAP to avoid breakdowns.
  • Housekeeping: Maintains a clean and organized work area, assists all areas of the plant with general housekeeping, cooperates with other shifts and the management team in housekeeping endeavors.
  • Communications: As a member of the Production team, ensures effective shift communication and teamwork with other operators occurs each scheduled shift. Maintains effective communication with members of the support group. When utilizing the Handheld radios, employees are expected to be professional and respectful when communicating.
  • Teamwork and Training: Promotes and contributes to the development of a strong team, works well among co-workers as a team, assists in coaching and training employees as requested by the management team.
  • Personal Development: Continuously improves your knowledge of the Aseptic Filling process, becomes familiar with SunOpta 360, completes and adheres to the Annual Alchemy Schedule.

Qualifications

  • Basic design and Math skills.
  • Knowledge of technology and engineering.

  • Ability to read blueprint of construction items.
  • Sanitary Welding certificate or Grade A experience preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of machines and tools used in welding, including designs, uses, maintenance and repair.
  • Basic understanding of design techniques, principles, and tools necessary for the precise production of technical plans, drawings, models and blueprints.
  • Ability to set up and use a TIG welder without help.
  • Ability to cut, weld, grind, and polish with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Safety oriented.

  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent ability to read and listen to assignments given in a variety of forms.
  • Basic understanding of mathematics as related to welding assignments.
  • Prioritize quality over quantity and take pride in your work.

Education

  • Minimum of a High school diploma or equivalent education.

Experience

  • Four years of experience and appropriate welding certifications for the type of welds to be performed.
