About the Role

The Fabrication & Manufacturing Engineer serves as the critical, hands-on link between the design engineering department and the fabrication shop floor. This role ensures all engineering drawings and CAD models are audited for Design for Manufacturability (DFM) before production begins, manages CNC machine files, supervises production workflows, and optimizes machine scheduling to keep custom switchgear projects on time and under budget.

Responsibilities

  • Technical File Management & DFM (Desk Side):
    • Design for Manufacturability (DFM) Audits: Review 3D models from SolidWorks and 2D layouts from AutoCAD to ensure parts can be fabricated, checking for impossible bend radiuses, holes too close to bend lines, or geometries exceeding machine limits.
    • CNC Programming & Nesting: Use CAM software to write precise G-code programs and optimize nesting layouts to maximize material utilization and minimize scrap.
    • Revision & Version Control: Ensure obsolete program files are deleted from machine controllers and operators load only current, engineering-approved file revisions.
    • Tooling Specification: Calculate correct K-factors and bend deductions for press brakes to ensure parts fold to exact dimensions on the first try.
  • Supervision & Workflow Execution (Floor Side):
    • Daily Production Scheduling: Coordinate raw material flow to machines, ensuring operators have optimized files and materials ready to prevent idle time.
    • Automation Management: Oversee scheduling and program accuracy for automated systems to prevent mechanical jamming or software conflicts.
    • First-Piece Setup Inspections: Create processes for operators to measure and audit the first part off the laser, punch, or brake against the master blueprint before full production.
    • Live Floor Troubleshooting: Respond immediately to machine errors, tooling collisions, or material fracturing, fixing programs at the controller to minimize downtime.
  • Process Improvement:
    • Jig and Fixture Design: Design custom templates, clamps, and jigs to speed up downstream workflows like welding and final assembly.
    • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Collaborate with the Manufacturing Engineering Team to write clear, visual work instructions for consistent machine setup across shifts.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering (or equivalent technical field/extensive shop floor programming experience).
  • Experience: 3–5+ years of hands-on experience in precision sheet metal or electrical switchgear fabrication.

Skills

  • Software Mastery: Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks), 2D CAD (AutoCAD), and industrial CAM nesting software.
  • Fabrication Expertise: Deep knowledge of laser cutting, copper punching (Boschert/AMADA), panel bending/folding, press brake operation, K-factors/bend deductions, and metallurgy.
  • Blueprint Literacy: Mastery of reading complex geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) drawings, multi-layered assembly schematics, and weld symbols.
  • Core Competencies:
    • Analytical problem-solving to optimize production processes.
    • Technical proficiency with ERP/MRP systems and fabrication manufacturing (e.g., machining, welding, sheet metal).
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for cross-department coordination.
    • Organizational skills to manage multiple projects and priorities.
    • High attention to detail in scheduling and inventory record maintenance.
    • Adaptability to respond quickly to changing priorities or emergency orders.

Working Conditions

The role operates in a standard office setting but frequently requires work in a manufacturing environment. Extended periods of sitting at a computer are common.

Pay

Up to $115,000.
