Fabric Worker (Tailoring).

About the role

This position involves making, modifying, and repairing specialized garments for the United States Military Academy. The role requires precise tailoring and alteration of military uniforms, including coats, jackets, and other tailored items, to ensure proper fit and finish.

Responsibilities

• Measure, mark, and alter tailored uniform garments such as long overcoats, full dress coats, dress coats, and parkas.
• Perform custom fitting and tailoring to meet cadet uniform specifications.
• Conduct braiding, machine basting, setting sleeves and collars by machine, and other specialized tailoring tasks as required.
• Use standard sewing equipment and basic measuring tools such as flexible measuring tapes, straight and curved rulers, and protractors.

Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and items over 50 pounds with assistance.
• Completion of a pre-employment physical examination and annual examinations to ensure physical health and fitness for duty.
• Appointment subject to a one-year probationary period unless previously meeting requirements outlined in 5 CFR Part 11.
• Appointment may require a suitability or fitness determination based on a Tier 1 background investigation.

Qualifications

• Ability to perform tailoring work without more than normal supervision, including measuring, marking, and altering tailored garments, following repair instructions, operating sewing equipment, and using measuring tools.
• Failure to meet the screen-out element will result in an ineligible rating.
• Applicants must receive at least two points on the screen-out element and an average of two points on all listed job elements to meet basic eligibility.

Physical Effort

• Stand at work tables to measure and mark materials; sit for long periods while operating sewing machines or performing hand sewing.
• Continual use of arms, hands, and fingers for tool use, material handling, and sewing.
• Frequent stooping, bending, and handling of heavy or bulky rolls of material or garment pieces.
• Ability to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds unassisted; items over 50 pounds require assistance.

Working Conditions

• Shop is adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated.
• Exposure to cuts, scratches, bruises, and minor injuries from handling tools.
• Possible irritation from dyes, dust, and lint from fabrics.
• Exposure to loud noises from sewing machines in the work area.
