About the Role

The Eye Bank Donor Coordinator processes all donor referrals by telephone and email, determines eligibility and suitability of referrals for eye donation, obtains legal authorization and medical/social history from donor families, coordinates the recovery of eye tissue, and maintains and completes donor records in the Utah Lions Eye Bank database.

Responsibilities

  • Document all information for each potential donor referral in the ULEB referral database.
  • Interview referring hospital healthcare professionals concerning the medical history of potential donors to determine donor eligibility.
  • Screen every potential case in relevant Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
  • Perform preliminary plasma dilution assessment of potential donors using information from healthcare professionals, code sheets, EMS reports, and transfusion records to determine if a pre-transfusion blood sample is needed.
  • Contact the Authorizing Decision Maker of potential eye donors to present the option of eye donation and answer questions.
  • Obtain recorded authorization and complete a medical/social history questionnaire over the phone if the family chooses to donate.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in sociology, psychology, social sciences, a related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
  • One year of related experience.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Certification as an Eye Bank Technician or Nursing Assistant is preferred.
  • This position is patient-sensitive and requires immunization according to CDC standards and hospital policy, with limited exemptions for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs.

Preferences

  • One year of experience in eye, organ, or tissue banking.
  • Certification as an Eye Bank Technician, Ophthalmic Technician, or Tissue Bank Specialist.
  • Experience with medical terminology.
  • Associate's degree in psychology, social work, a related field, or scientific discipline.

Each Eye Bank Donor Coordinator completes a formal training period prior to assuming these responsibilities.

Schedule

Full-time: Saturday 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Wednesday 12:00 PM – 12:00 AM, Thursday 12:00 PM – 12:00 AM

Pay

$18.00 – $23.00 per hour
