About the role

This position is responsible for planning, organizing and directing the City's forestry program.

Responsibilities

  • Select, train, and evaluate staff.
  • Plan, organize, and direct the work of others.
  • Develop and implement goals, objectives, policies, procedures, work standards, and internal controls.
  • Analyze complex operational and administrative problems and evaluate alternative solutions.
  • Exercise independent judgment and initiative within general policy guidelines.
  • Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with those encountered in the course of the work.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to completion of high school and five (5) years increasingly responsible journey level experience which included two (2) years at the supervisory level equivalent to Forestry Supervisor.
  • Possession of a valid class "B" California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Willingness to work out of doors in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of methods, techniques and equipment used in arboriculture and tree climbing, including rigging and relevant safety practices.
  • Principles and practices of effective employee supervision, including selection, training, work evaluation and discipline.
  • Principles and practices of administration, including goal setting, policy and procedure development and implementation, evaluation and work standards, and budgeting.
  • Safety practices and equipment pertaining to the work.
  • Codes, ordinances and regulations pertaining to trees.

Skills

  • Planning, organizing, directing, reviewing and evaluating the work of others.
  • Selecting, motivating, and evaluating staff and providing for their training and development.
  • Analyzing complex operational and administrative problems, evaluating alternative solutions, and recommending or adopting effective courses of action.
  • Developing and implementing goals, objectives, policies, procedures, work standards and internal controls.
  • Preparing clear and concise records, reports, correspondence and other written materials.
  • Exercising independent judgment and initiative within general policy guidelines.
  • Establishing and maintaining an effective working relationship with those encountered in the course of the work.
