About the role
The Exterior Sprayer spray paints the exterior of railcars and repairs poor exterior paintwork.
Responsibilities
- Suits up in protective paint suit and air-supplied respirator to prepare for spray painting
- Gathers appropriate exterior painting equipment for painting the exterior of railcars
- Spray paints the exterior of the railcars using spray painting equipment in a paint bay
- Prepares and repaints poor exterior paintwork
- Reads S gauges to ensure that paint is spraying at exact specifications
- Troubleshoots, maintains, and cleans paint equipment
- Ensures that safety and housekeeping standards are met and maintained
Requirements
- Ability to be fit-tested and wear a respirator in the areas where respirator use is required
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to use a paint brush and apply different types of paints according to specifications
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred)
- 1+ years experience spray painting (preferred)
- Ability to read blueprints and schematics (preferred)
Work Environment
The work environment involves exposure to heat, cold, noise, moving railcars and machinery, and trip hazards. Head, hearing, eye, and foot protection—including composite toed safety shoes—are required. This position also involves exposure to hazardous chemicals, necessitating the use of a blast suit, gloves, and a respirator. For safety purposes, employees must be clean-shaven when wearing a respirator. Additional personal protective equipment may be required as determined by the environment. This position may require working at heights of 20 ft or within confined spaces.
