About the Role

The Extended Day Teacher for Grades 1-5 designs and leads activities after school for Lower School students. This teacher is familiar with progressive education, with an interest in experiential learning and emergent curriculum. The Extended Day teacher works in collaboration with the Extended Day team to foster an inclusive, caring environment that promotes independence, agency, and the development of social-emotional skills.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and develop the Extended Day program of activities for students in grades 1-5 in partnership with the Extended Learning Assistant Director.
  • Design a program that effectively supports students and fosters an environment aligned with Catlin Gabel’s progressive pedagogical approach, emphasizing student voice, choice, and agency.
  • Cultivate an inclusive, equitable environment where students experience a sense of belonging and agency.
  • Design and maintain an engaging environment, carefully choosing materials and activities that are age-appropriate, open-ended, and student-led.
  • Provide behavior support through a progressive, restorative framework, guiding students to navigate social conflicts as opportunities for learning rather than disciplinary incidents.
  • Serve as a critical link between home and school, ensuring the after-school experience is reflective of the family-school partnership.
  • Ensure the safe operation of the program and maintain compliance with the State of Oregon Child Care Rules.
  • Maintain effective communication with staff, parents, students, school colleagues, facilities personnel, and the business office of the school.
  • Complete all required Human Resources trainings annually (e.g., CPR, first aid, mandatory reporting, handling of hazardous materials).
  • Design activities for Day Camps in collaboration with the Extended Learning Assistant Director and the Extended Day Teacher for Preschool and Kindergarten. Day Camps occur twice a semester, with optional additional work hours from 9:00am-5:30pm.
  • Opportunities to be a substitute teaching assistant during the school day from 8:00am-2:00pm.

Qualifications

  • BA or BS from an accredited college or university, preferably in education, early childhood, child development, or recreation, OR
  • Completion of 20 credits in one of these areas, plus one year of experience in a certified childcare center or comparable program with school-aged students, OR
  • 2 years of teaching experience in a certified childcare center or comparable program with school-aged students.

Working Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work is primarily performed in a classroom setting with occasional to frequent work leading students in off-campus activities.
  • Requires ability to traverse campus to accompany and ensure the safety of children, including moving up and down stairs or hills between facilities multiple times throughout the workday.
  • Frequent bending, squatting, stooping, and kneeling.
  • Occasional lifting of 30-50 pounds.
  • This position combines daily active movement in the classroom and after school doing lesson preparation, direct attention to children (as necessary), and stationary participation in collaborative meetings 30%-40% of the time.

Schedule

The Extended Day Teacher’s work hours are 2:00-6:00pm Monday-Thursday, and 1:00-6:00pm on Friday. If available, the Extended Day teacher may work from 9:00am-5:30pm when Day Camps are in session.

Pay

$22-25/hour
