Extended Day Program Teacher

About the role

University Child Development School (UCDS) is an independent school in Seattle serving infants through fifth graders and operating a graduate teacher-preparation program. The UCDS Infant-Toddler Program (The Studio), a Reggio-inspired early learning program for children ages 6 weeks to 4 years, seeks a part-time Extended Day Program (EDP) teacher to support full daily coverage for its youngest students.

Responsibilities

• Support Special Programs team in facilitating classroom activities and maintaining a safe, positive learning environment.
• Facilitate play-based, inquiry-driven learning experiences aligned with the Reggio-inspired approach.
• Prepare and maintain classroom materials and environment to support exploration, discovery, and student engagement.
• Cultivate meaningful, trusting relationships with infants and toddlers to support their social and emotional development.
• Monitor children’s health and safety at all times; respond promptly to needs or concerns.
• Provide attentive daily care for young children, including diapering, feeding, dressing, and rest routines.
• Communicate regularly with parents and families regarding each child’s day, needs, and wellbeing.
• Implement all policies and procedures established under The Studio educational philosophy, licensing regulations, The Studio Handbook, and The Studio Health and Safety Policies Handbook.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Education & Experience: Enrollment in or completion of high school required; experience working with children preferred.
• Knowledge & Skills:
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a teaching team.
  • Patience and composure while supporting young children’s needs.
  • Interest in or knowledge of Reggio Emilia–inspired early learning approaches, including play-based and inquiry-driven instruction.
  • Ability to build rapport and communicate effectively with children, parents, and staff.
  • Ability to accept direction and feedback constructively.
  • Adaptability to changing assignments, classroom duties, or routines.
  • Attentive, responsive care for infants and young children.
• Licenses & Certifications: Current First Aid and CPR certification (or obtained within three months of employment); must pass Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) and Washington State Patrol (WSP) background checks.

Work Environment

• Regularly stands, walks, and moves throughout classrooms and outdoor spaces; frequently sits, kneels, or works at floor level.
• Occasionally lifts or carries items up to 40 lbs and may lift or carry a child in the course of care.
• Works outdoors in Pacific Northwest weather, including rain, cold, and sun.
• Supervises children in indoor and outdoor settings; may accompany students on field trips or off-site programming.
• Exposed to bodily fluids in the course of diapering or toilet-training assistance and follows UCDS health and safety protocols.
• Maintains a regular on-site schedule; may include early morning, evening, or extended hours based on programming needs.

Schedule

Monday–Friday, 2:00 pm–6:00 pm, with the possibility of full-day substitute teaching as needed. Preference given to candidates who can work Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Pay

$24/hour.
