Disability North · Newcastle, CA · 2 wk ago
AdministrativeInternship

Hours: 20-24 hours per week, including day shifts, waking night shifts, and respite.

About the role

We are looking for a Personal Assistant to support a 27-year-old man with complex health needs. He is upbeat, sociable, and enjoys being around people—whether through direct interaction, sensory play, or outings. He communicates through gestures, eye movements, and vocalizations, and it’s essential to learn his methods of communication to understand his needs and preferences.

He enjoys cinema trips, beach outings, sensory and musical toys, CBeebies, and company. A patient, calm, and attentive approach—with a touch of silliness—works best with him. He has a mischievous sense of humor and enjoys playful teasing when in the right mood.

It’s important to be mindful of what is discussed in his presence, as he understands more than he can communicate. Shouting or raised voices, especially in his home, will distress him. If providing overnight support, your presence in his room may startle him, and he will need reassurance and company afterward.

Responsibilities

  • Support with personal care, including hoisting, peg feeding, supra-pubic catheter management, and temperature regulation.
  • Assist with TPN feeding (training provided once experienced with other aspects of care).
  • Provide overnight support in the home without supervision.
  • Engage in activities he enjoys, such as outings, sensory play, and companionship.
  • Drive a large wheelchair-adapted vehicle for outings and appointments.
  • Respect privacy and maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Work flexibly outside standard 9-to-5 hours, including waking night shifts.

Requirements

  • Experience driving large wheelchair-adapted vehicles (essential).
  • Willingness to learn physical care skills, including hoisting, bending, and pushing.
  • Patience, attentiveness, and a calm demeanor with a sense of humor.
  • Ability to use initiative and work independently under the direction of the employer.
  • Reliability and flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights.
  • Permission to work in the U.K. at the time of employment.

Skills

  • Ability to learn and perform medical procedures (e.g., peg feeding, catheter care, TPN).
  • Strong communication skills to understand non-verbal cues.
  • Physical ability to assist with mobility and personal care.

Benefits

  • Pay rate: £16.00 per hour.

Schedule

  • 20-24 hours per week.
  • Day shifts, waking night shifts, and respite care.
