About the role

This opportunity supports a wide range of testing and commissioning activities through application of client testing standards, industry standards (IEEE, NETA, NFPA, NESC), and manufacturer recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs assigned testing and commissioning tasks for Protection and Control systems on high voltage substations.
  • Executes moderately complex assignments, and contributes to regulatory compliance, safety adherence, and data integrity across active job sites.
  • Provides day-to-day support to field teams, helps resolve challenges on-site, and mentors junior technicians to promote quality, efficiency, and safe work practices.
  • Escalates complex technical problems or unexpected field conditions to the site lead or project manager.
  • Supports the Project Lead or Field Supervisor on projects.
  • Participates in daily safety briefings and ensures compliance with health and safety protocols.
  • Communicates progress, field observations, and potential delays to the project team.
  • Maintains attention to detail when filling out logs, photo documentation, and label entries.
  • Collaborates with other technicians to maintain workflow, safety, and quality standards.
  • Affords clerical responsibilities such as timecards, expense reports, and project reports.
  • Exercises responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adheres to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in the electrical testing industry, including experience in medium and high voltage circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, and substation protection and controls testing.
  • Demonstrable expertise on transmission, generation, and distribution relays (SEL, Basler, Beckwith, and GE families) and protective schemes.
  • Technical skills related to protective relays include relay calibration utilizing test sets/measuring devices such as Omicron CMC 256/356 and Doble F6150, control scheme testing, testing of the sensing CT/PT circuits, ability to upload settings to microprocessor relays, and static & dynamic testing of microprocessor-based protective relays.
  • Proven experience with electrical field testing standards, practices, and procedures, such as NETA, IEEE, and NFPA applicable standards.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of testing electrical distribution, generation, and transmission projects with voltage levels ranging from 15 kV to 500 kV, including protective relays and circuit breakers.
  • Experience using technical software such as ProTesT, Protection Suite, ENOSERV RTS, Omicron Test Universe, and AcSELerator Quickset for testing purposes and data review.
  • Ability to identify routine field challenges and equipment issues, responding within established procedures and escalating atypical conditions.
  • Skilled in preparing field logs, sketches, and digital reports.
  • Physical stamina to work in outdoor and physically demanding conditions.
  • Experience collaborating with contractors, technicians, and engineers.
  • Committed to field safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
  • Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills for field team collaboration.
  • Skilled in critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from inspection and testing results.
  • Ability to support a wide variety of tasks in dynamic or changing environments.
  • Capable of following procedures, meeting deadlines, and maintaining accountability in the field.
  • Commitment to continued learning and development in technical field services.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and ethical behavior in technical environments.
  • Competent self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Reliable, punctual, with the ability to work independently or with a team.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Willingness and physical ability to lift up to 35 pounds individually, and up to 100 pounds with assistance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Technology degree in a similar discipline.
  • Experience in testing and troubleshooting electromechanical relays.
  • Experience in testing and commissioning electrical equipment on high voltage substations such as CTs, CCVTs, PLC systems, and DC systems, including batteries and battery chargers.
  • Current OSHA 30-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
