About the Role
An optician is an eye care professional who counsels patients through the eyewear selection process, educating them on doctor recommendations to provide the best possible vision. The optician advises patients on the best lens options for their prescription and creates a fun shopping environment through the selection of fashionable eyewear. This role also involves creative design for optical merchandise displays and strong administrative tasks such as calculating co-pays, reviewing insurance eligibility, and preparing work orders for the optical lab.
Responsibilities
- Assist patients in selecting spectacles, providing education on quality choices, lens selection, and frame styling to fit their lifestyle and prescription.
- Calculate insurance co-pay based on insurance eligibility.
- Accurately enter spectacle orders and ensure timely delivery by monitoring status daily.
- Receive spectacle orders, verify accuracy, notify patients, and schedule dispensing.
- Contact patients for follow-up on adapting to dispensed eyewear and prescribed contacts.
- Perform spectacle adjustments and repairs when necessary.
- Troubleshoot patient concerns with eyewear.
- Educate patients on the care of prescribed eyewear.
- Maintain inventory of optical retail area, including lab supplies, and report as required.
- Maintain displays of optical merchandise.
- Monitor patient flow throughout appointments and communicate delays to other departments.
Requirements
- Ability to communicate and provide superior customer service to foster long-lasting relationships.
- Creative design skills for creating and maintaining optical merchandise displays.
- Strong administrative skills for tasks such as calculating co-pays and reviewing insurance eligibility.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Physical Activity: Standing, walking, stooping, grasping, typing, and manual dexterity. Visual and verbal acuity are required to determine accuracy and thoroughness of work.
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds regularly from floor to waist, 5 pounds from waist to shoulder, and 5 pounds from shoulder to overhead.
- Work Environment: Professional medical office setting.
