Experienced Energy Trader
About the role
As an Experienced Discretionary Energy Trader, you will have a real opportunity to make a huge impact on the firm. You will work side by side with other successful and talented individuals to capitalize on market opportunities across global energy markets. This role is for someone who flourishes in a fast-paced environment, has a strong work ethic, a competitive attitude, and a proven record of profitability in a trading position for at least 3 years. This is a senior risk-taking role that will be a key idea generator for the desk.
The ideal candidate would work hybrid from our headquarters in Chicago, IL or office in White Plains, NY, though we are open to remote candidates.
Responsibilities
- Manage your own trading book with a focus on energy markets such as refined products, natural gas, and power
- Manage your own risk across a portfolio of active strategies and drive trading decisions
- Analyze market fundamentals including supply/demand dynamics, storage levels, weather patterns, geopolitical developments, and regulatory changes
- Interpret price action, spreads, and order flow to identify trading opportunities
- Develop, test, and refine discretionary or systematic-informed strategies using historical and real-time market data
- Continuously monitor market conditions, news, and macroeconomic and energy-specific events
- Monitor material changes in levels of risk and variance in PnL, especially focused around deviation from your plans, and proactively communicate those changes to leadership
Requirements
- Experience trading energy products such as natural gas or power
- Nice-to-have experience includes emissions markets, biofuels, Renewable Energy Certificates, or cross-commodity trading
- Proven track record independently managing a PnL, or being a senior member of a team driving strategy
- Prior Proprietary Trading or Hedge Fund PM experience strongly preferred
- Larger bank or physical trading shop experience may be considered if significant decision-making autonomy existed
- Defined discretionary edge in energy markets such as fundamental modeling, weather-driven analysis, flow-based insights, or relative value/spread trading
- Strong understanding of energy market structure (e.g., storage, transportation, seasonality, regional dislocations)
- Entrepreneurial mindset with competitive nature
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work both autonomously and as a team player
- Quant skills and data literacy are a plus but not required; ability to incorporate data into decision-making is preferred
- Openness to feedback and willingness to adapt your trading style with changes in market conditions
- 3+ years of verified, risk-adjusted profitability
Pay
The approximate annual base compensation range for this position in Chicago, IL and New York is $72,000 to $120,000. The actual offer, reflecting the total compensation package plus benefits, will be determined by factors including the applicant’s experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, geographic location, and internal equity. In addition to salary, the total rewards package includes a discretionary bonus.
