About the role
The Exercise Specialist at PIH Health is responsible for developing, implementing, and supervising exercise training guidelines and sessions for cardiac rehabilitation patients. This position also involves administering fitness assessments on an outpatient population and providing exercise expertise as needed.
Responsibilities
- Develops and implements exercise training guidelines for cardiac rehabilitation patients.
- Administers fitness assessments on an outpatient population.
- Provides exercise expertise as needed.
- Performs graded exercise tests (GXT) using a variety of modes and protocols.
- Performs GXT’s utilizing metabolic carts for expired gas analysis.
- Evaluates and interprets expired gas values.
- Conducts all standard pulmonary function tests (full flow loop, lung volumes, etc).
- Assesses body composition using skinfold method.
- Conducts a variety of upper and lower extremity flexibility and strength tests.
- Familiarizes with invasive and non-invasive cardiodiagnostic tests and procedures.
- Develops individualized exercise guidelines for healthy and high-risk individuals and cardiac patients.
- Communicates effectively both written and orally.
- Passes safety, cultural sensitivity, and blood pathogen classes.
Requirements
- Masters Degree in Exercise Science or related field.
- Basic Life Support Certification from the American Heart Association.
- Extensive clinical experience in the management of post-operative and post-myocardial infarction patients.
- Administrative experience in cardiac rehabilitation.
- Thorough knowledge of prevention, intervention, and rehabilitation programs regarding all contributing factors; exercise, diet, stress management, and risk factor modification.
- Demonstrated experience in diagnostic exercise testing.
- Demonstrated experience in fitness assessments involving expired gas analysis, body composition assessment (skinfolds), pulmonary function, strength, flexibility, and risk factor profiles.
Qualifications
- Training in ECG and arrhythmia recognition.
- Ability to perform the following tests: Graded exercise tests (GXT), metabolic cart for expired gas analysis, standard pulmonary function tests, body composition assessment, upper and lower extremity flexibility and strength tests, invasive and non-invasive cardiodiagnostic tests and procedures.
Skills
- Written and oral communication skills.
- Certification as an Exercise Specialist or higher from the American College of Sports Medicine or equivalent.
- American Heart Association ACLS certification.
Pay
$33.35 - $55.02 per hour
