Exercise Specialist

About the role

Work in collaboration with the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute and is responsible for carrying out specialized strength and conditioning programs established for cardiac rehabilitation patients. Provide education and teach patients the proper exercise techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and evaluate exercise programs for cardiac patients in all phases of cardiac rehabilitation in collaboration with and under the supervision of the Exercise Physiologist, Cardiac Rehab RN and/or Physical Therapist.
  • Works collaboratively with all members of the HVI team to ensure services are consistent with planned surgical interventions and pre and post op care along with all Cardiac Rehab Patients.
  • Aid in insurance authorization, scheduling, and billing to carry out patients’ established plans of care.
  • Complete all required feedback and communication to patient and healthcare team including EMR documentation and reports concerning education, exercise progression, exercise treatment, and monitored physiological and vital responses of the patient.
  • Immediately communicate to appropriate healthcare team members any adverse patient responses to any education, exercise, medications, or treatment.
  • Set up, monitor, and read EKG/ECG systems used during cardiac rehabilitation and exercise.
  • Maintain exercise equipment with regards to cleaning and inspection.
  • Ensure that patients and their support systems understand education provided as to the patient’s medical condition, plan of care, and established exercise goals.
  • Identify own learning needs and make plans to meet these needs.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology OR Exercise Science.
  • Certification: Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
  • Prior Certification: Certified Exercise Specialist by The American College of Sports Medicine or its equivalent preferred.

Skills

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Knowledge in working with patients at risk for or with known cardiopulmonary disease.
