About the Role

Under the direction of Operations, the Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the assigned YMCA location. This position provides cause-driven leadership in staff supervision, volunteer management, fiscal management, financial development, membership and program administration, facility and equipment stewardship, community relations, and personal-professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision of day-to-day operations, including membership engagement and retention, aquatic and sports programming, youth and family programs, and teen programming (60% of duties)
  • Leadership of the Annual Giving Campaign (20% of duties)
  • Board and staff development (20% of duties)
  • Develop, manage, and achieve budget expectations with an emphasis on membership growth, child care, program development, personal training revenue, sports and aquatic programming, community relations, and fundraising
  • Responsible for raising funds based on need and expectation
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partnerships
  • Develop, manage, and monitor center operating budgets to meet or exceed targets; initiate and manage adjustments to ensure balanced operations
  • Implement Association membership strategies to support recruitment and retention of members
  • Create a member-focused culture and model relationship-building skills in all interactions
  • Develop long-range plans for program and service expansion in alignment with YMCA objectives
  • Represent and promote the YMCA in the local community by developing positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities
  • Ensure safety, cleanliness, and functionality of all facilities and equipment
  • Recruit, hire, train, develop, and lead employees and volunteers; review and evaluate staff performance
  • Ensure all program operations comply with association procedures, including emergency, insurance, accident, purchasing, personnel, and accounting systems
  • Provide leadership and accountability for achieving the Annual Giving campaign goals
  • Provide leadership to the Board of Managers and related committees
  • Incorporate character development within YMCA activities

Requirements

  • Strong business operations background with a proven track record in producing growth, annual giving, and strong financial management
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in Human Services, Business Management, or equivalent
  • Five or more years of successful management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency in health & wellness, business, or related field
  • Supervision of full and part-time employees and accountability for an annual budget exceeding $1 million
  • Ability to lead operations including staff development, budget monitoring, membership and program development, financial development, marketing, public relations, and volunteer development
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations
  • YMCA Multi-Team Leader certification preferred
  • Daily onsite work with occasional after-hours response; must reliably commute to the assigned location and reside within approximately 30 miles or 45 minutes of the worksite by start date
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and make non-routine decisions regarding operational issues
  • Effective team-building and leadership skills
  • Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with senior leadership, peers, and subordinates
  • Positive, energetic attitude toward YMCA work, goals, and values
  • Ability to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day and travel as needed for operational management
  • Superior oral and written communication skills to engage with staff, volunteers, members, vendors, and community leaders

Working Conditions

  • Physically able to complete required job functions, including use of hands, arms, and fingers; ability to talk and hear; use of a computer; sitting and standing; regularly moving/lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to enter all YMCA environments (office spaces, indoor/outdoor maintenance/mechanical areas, fitness areas, pool and pool space, camping areas, unimproved outdoor locations, and other program areas)
  • Continuous operations requiring attention to detail and multitasking
  • Ability to complete required certifications
