About the role

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) seeks a full-time Executive Director of Public Engagement in the Bureau of External Affairs. The role plays a critical role in advancing public safety through productive partnerships with various stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Oversight and administration of Fire and life safety education programs, including Fire Safety Education, Mobile CPR, and Stop the Bleed Training Units.
  • Ensuring that programs, curriculum, and messaging are culturally relevant to diverse communities throughout New York City.
  • Public outreach and community preparedness grant programs, such as Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Installation initiatives and Community Risk Reduction planning.
  • Community Affairs Unit that navigates communication and partnerships with NYC’s 59 Community Boards, Borough Presidents, Community, Faith, and School-Based organizations to bolster awareness of fire prevention, emergency operations, and Department initiatives.
  • Uniformed Community Liaisons that develop partnerships that improve community awareness of the response areas Fire/EMS units serve. These liaisons enhance awareness of FDNY programs/initiatives and local leadership to communities throughout Divisions.
  • Recruitment strategies, specifically developing culturally relevant public messaging, campaigns, and partnerships that raise and maintain engagement and awareness of FDNY careers in Fire, EMS, and Fire Protection Inspection services at the community level, with direct consultation with FDNY Recruitment.
  • Establishment and upkeep of both private and public partnerships that help foster FDNY initiatives relevant to fire/life safety education, recruitment, and building relationships.

Requirements

  • A master's degree from an accredited college in economics, finance, accounting, business, public administration, public health, human resources management, management science, operations research, organizational behavior, industrial psychology, statistics, personnel administration, labor relations, psychology, sociology, human resources development, political science, urban studies, or a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, and two years of satisfactory full-time professional experience in one or a combination of the following: budget administration, accounting, economic or financial administration, fiscal or economic research; management or methods analysis, operations research, organizational research or program evaluation; personnel or public administration, recruitment, position classification, personnel relations, labor relations, employee benefits, staff development, employment program planning/administration, labor market research, economic planning, social services program planning/evaluation, or fiscal management.
  • Eighteen (18) months of this experience must have been in an executive, managerial, administrative, or supervisory capacity. Supervision must have included supervising staff performing professional work in the areas described above.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of satisfactory full-time professional experience in the areas described in "1" above, including the 18 months of executive, managerial, administrative, or supervisory experience, as described in "1" above.
  • An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college and six years of satisfactory full-time professional experience as described in "1" above, including the 18 months of executive, managerial, administrative, or supervisory experience, as described in "1" above.
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and eight years of satisfactory full-time professional experience as described in "1" above, including the 18 months of executive, managerial, administrative, or supervisory experience, as described in "1" above.
  • A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2", "3", or "4" above. College education may be substituted for professional experience at the rate of 30 semester credits from an accredited college for one year of experience.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience directing community affairs and/or intergovernmental issues.
  • Prior experience overseeing public-facing education programs and planning/coordinating large scale educational or outreach events.
  • Strong knowledge of NYC government.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to juggle multiple requests and issues concurrently from a multitude of requesters.
  • Strong managerial and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven track record of effectively interacting with senior management.
  • Ability to work strategically and collaboratively across departments.
  • Strong preference for experience working with members of a uniformed agency.
  • Preference given to candidates who possess a Master’s degree in public administration, public policy or related field.

Benefits

Salary range: $75,443.00 – $197,553.00
