About the role
This position is open only to current City of Yuma full-time employees and part-time employees who have worked more than 60 days in the past 12 months. Temporary employees are not eligible for this recruitment.
Responsibilities
- Acts in the absence of the Crew Leader, having full responsibility for the crew in field activities
- Prioritizes and assigns field tasks to team members
- Makes independent judgments and decisions on assignments, as the need arises
- Inspects, maintains, and operates wastewater collection, and storm water systems
- Performs utility locates (Bluestake) and marks Sanitary, Storm, and Water mainlines and water services using City of Yuma Water, Sanitary, and Storm Atlas
- Operates, maintains, and inspects a variety of wastewater collection vehicles, equipment and tools including the Jet Vac trucks, CCTV inspection van and trailer, utility truck, atmosphere tester, and metal locator, in the completion of various operation, installation, maintenance, and inspection tasks
- Operates PACP certified closed circuit TV inspection computer recording system, using the City’s Distribution/Sewer and Storm Atlas system for normal system assessment or emergency situations
- Maintains computerized records of daily work operations and activities, and “Bluestake” operations; and verifies the accurate work reporting of assigned work crew
- Oversees and performs work in confined spaces, assuring that operations are in compliance with all aspects of the City of Yuma’s Confined Space Policy
- Provides excellent customer service, and responds to and follows up on inquiries and complaints from the general public
- Responds to wastewater collection system maintenance/repair emergencies and may lead crew members during the event
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Requirements
- A High School Diploma or GED
- Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience that includes installing and operating complex wastewater collection and/or storm sewer mains, services, and related structures
- Class B Arizona Commercial Driver’s License with CDL Tanker Endorsement, and a valid Grade 1 Wastewater Collection System Operator certificate endorsement at the time of application, or the ability to obtain this certification through state reciprocity within six (6) months of hire
- An employee in this class is required to live within fifteen (15) miles of the City limits, and within the United States
- Must obtain a Grade 2 Wastewater Collection System Operator Certification issued by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality within 12 months of appointment to the position
- Required to perform standby duty, and to be available for emergency call out duty on a rotational basis
Qualifications
- Knowledge of computer database entry and basic math principles
- Methods, equipment, and techniques used in the installation, maintenance, operation and repair of water, sanitary, and storm sewer mains, service connections, and all appurtenances
- Hazards of wastewater collection work, and safety measures to be observed, including trench safety, proper selection and use of personal protective equipment and Confined Space Entry procedures
- Heavy equipment operation and maintenance including service, maintenance and hydraulic principles and practices
- Knowledge of advanced level manual and skilled tasks related to the maintenance and operation of the City’s wastewater collection system, including pipe inspection and manhole installation
- Occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures
- Communication skills, including reading maps, blueprints, and diagrams, understanding and following oral and written instructions, communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Proper creation and application of traffic control plans to insure safety of public and work crew
