About the role
As an Excess Workers’ Compensation Regional Underwriting Manager, you will take ownership of the underwriting, service, and profitability of a regional book of business while serving as a key face of Safety National in the marketplace. You will evaluate new and renewal excess workers’ compensation opportunities, analyze complex exposures and loss histories, establish appropriate program structures and pricing, and negotiate coverage, premium, terms, and conditions with brokers within your underwriting authority.
In this highly visible role, you will build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and insureds while identifying opportunities to grow and retain profitable business. Responsibilities include meeting directly with clients and risk management professionals, conducting facility visits, communicating the value of Safety National’s coverage and services, and developing a pipeline of prospective accounts.
You will collaborate closely with Business Development, Claims, Risk Control, Actuarial, Legal, and other internal partners to deliver comprehensive solutions to clients. Additional duties include monitoring market and workers’ compensation trends, coordinating underwriting and pricing recommendations, supporting cross-selling initiatives, participating in regional and national industry conferences, and contributing to strategic planning and the continued development of excess workers’ compensation underwriting practices.
This position requires significant market engagement, with approximately 40% of your time spent outside the office soliciting new business, strengthening relationships, and maintaining renewal business. You will also provide guidance and assistance to less experienced underwriters and trainees.
Responsibilities

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in insurance, Accounting, Finance, Marketing, or a related field, or sufficient on-the-job underwriting experience in lieu of a degree
- 5 or more years of experience underwriting large workers’ compensation accounts
- Experience working on large excess workers’ compensation accounts in a sales, underwriting, or analysis role
- Regional/local market knowledge of brokers and accounts
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with a background in marketing
- Strong analytical, organizational, and time-management skills
- Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities to meet multiple deadlines
- Ability to work independently while adhering to company underwriting guidelines
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
- Willingness to spend approximately 40% of time outside the office
- Presently authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
Preferred Qualifications
- CPCU or other relevant professional designation
- Protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information and technology assets in accordance with Safety National policies
Schedule
This position allows for a hybrid work schedule, including a minimum of 3 days per week in the San Francisco, CA office located at 44 Montgomery Street, Suite 4250, San Francisco, CA 94104.
Pay
The target base salary range for this position is $133,750 to $210,000. Compensation for the successful candidate will consider the candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, competencies, experience, and geographic location.
