Excess Energy Underwriter

Berkley Specialty Excess provides excess and surplus lines coverages for mid-market companies with hard-to-place, specialized risks including environmental (excess and primary); excess energy and excess for other industry verticals. Distribution is limited to industry-specialized brokers, wholesale for all products, and large retail brokers for environmental products.

About the role

The Excess Energy Underwriter, in conjunction with senior underwriters, will monitor renewal production, profitability, and maintain agency relationships, with opportunities to write new business. The role involves utilizing underwriting expertise and authority guidelines to make independent decisions on renewal accounts within granted authority.

Responsibilities

  • Review and underwrite renewals based on granted authority and provide guidance to the associate underwriting team.
  • Establish terms and pricing; negotiate terms with wholesale brokers.
  • Underwrite fast-track renewals and seek guidance from the senior underwriting team as needed.
  • Make sound risk and pricing decisions to achieve profitable loss ratios.
  • Document underwriting files to support acceptability and pricing in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Achieve designated customer service standards.
  • Provide detailed guidance to the operations team to ensure policy delivery aligns with quoted terms and conditions.
  • Review post-transaction requests for acceptability up to granted authority.
  • Review inspections to confirm accounts align with preliminary underwriting information and take necessary action.
  • Utilize underwriting tools to determine acceptable risk characteristics, classifications, insurance-to-value, and calculate rates.
  • Apply proficient coverage knowledge in Energy Casualty Business.
  • Take on special projects to advance underwriting knowledge across departments.
  • Consult with the Energy department on territorial expertise regarding market conditions, trends, and state-specific nuances.
  • Communicate effectively (written/verbal) with internal and external customers to maintain standards of excellence.
  • Support the underwriting audit process.
  • Act as a role model promoting the company brand and culture.
  • Assist with special projects and tasks as directed.
  • Travel as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of commercial lines experience.
  • Excess and Surplus lines experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage deadlines and volumes effectively.
  • Proven track record of working under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to relate and communicate with all members of the organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to exhibit informal leadership across the team.
  • Basic knowledge of computer programs in a Windows environment (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent insurance experience required.
