Environmental Services Technician position focused on maintaining cleanliness, safety, and infection control in hospital and off-site facilities.
Responsibilities
- Clean and disinfect assigned areas, including patient rooms, offices, restrooms, elevators, stairwells, and other hospital or off-site facility spaces, using appropriate cleaning solutions and following established schedules and procedures.
- Operate various cleaning equipment and handle chemicals according to department policies.
- Maintain work areas in an orderly, clean, and safe condition.
- Demonstrate commitment to customer satisfaction by utilizing AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) with internal and external customers, meeting system goals.
- Resolve interpersonal conflicts constructively and maintain a positive, supportive attitude with patients, families, and staff in all situations.
- Follow procedures for patient discharges, including thorough cleaning and sanitizing of beds, rooms, and washrooms using appropriate germicides.
- Select and transport appropriate cleaning materials and supplies to work areas.
- Replenish supplies such as paper towels, toilet tissue, and soap; collect additional supplies from the environmental services storeroom as needed.
- Routinely collect waste, sanitize garbage cans, and separate regular and recyclable trash according to procedures.
- Observe and follow Standard (Universal) Precautions, Infection Control Policies, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Clean or sanitize emergency spills as requested and handle hazardous and medical waste according to Infection Control Committee procedures.
- Prepare detergents, germicidal solutions, and other cleaning/disinfecting solutions according to established formulas.
- Sweep, dust mop, wet mop floors, and spot clean carpets using appropriate solutions; shampoo furniture, carpets, and rugs as scheduled.
- Identify types of soiling and use proper solutions for cleaning and spotting as outlined in departmental policies.
- Move and arrange equipment and furniture for cleaning, rearrangement, or relocation according to floor plans and specifications.
- Clean equipment and report any needing repair to supervisors; appropriately report safety hazards.
- Return unused supplies to storage, clean carts and equipment, and ensure all items are replaced in an orderly manner.
- Collect and distribute soiled and clean linens as required; place full, tied bags of soiled linen in linen chutes.
- Ensure a safe, clean, and attractive environment for patients, visitors, and associates at all times; wash hands thoroughly throughout the day in adherence to hospital handwashing policy.
- Demonstrate commitment to professional growth by attending mandatory meetings, completing annual CBTs, and seeking education in areas of identified growth needs.
- Maintain proper attendance and punctuality, planning time off in advance and providing adequate notice for absences according to departmental policy.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED or equivalent work experience.
- Basic computer skills preferred.
- Able to operate small electrical equipment, such as vacuum cleaners.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, including reading and comprehending chemical labels and safety materials.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Job responsibilities involve walking, standing, bending, climbing, and lifting throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance; for lifts over 35 pounds, use lifting equipment or assistance from another associate.
- Unique lifting or movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
