Event Support Crew Member I
About the Role
Nauticus is a maritime discovery center located along the waterfront of downtown Norfolk, Virginia. The Event Support Crew Member I will maintain a high standard of cleanliness for the Maritime Center, Battleship, Sailing Center, and the Cruise Terminal, working closely with other teams in a dynamic environment supporting daytime operations, events, cruise, and port of call activities.
Essential Functions
The position includes housekeeping, event support, and guest engagement duties to ensure safe, orderly, and welcoming facilities.
Housekeeping
- Dust, mop, and vacuum all areas.
- Sanitize restrooms and maintain glass windows, doors, and other surfaces.
- Restock restroom supplies and empty trash receptacles, disposing of trash in dumpsters.
- Break down boxes for proper disposal.
- Perform routine housekeeping in office spaces (dust, vacuum, trash removal, kitchen and refrigerator upkeep).
- Complete daily assigned tasks to keep all areas safe and welcoming.
- Assist with inspection, minor repairs, and general maintenance of housekeeping tools, equipment, and operational assets.
- Other duties as assigned.
Events / Cruise / Port of Calls
- Set up rooms and meeting spaces, including moving furniture, transporting boxes, and arranging tables and chairs.
- Support increased activity during cruise and port‑of‑call days by preparing terminal spaces and assisting with crowd‑flow equipment.
- Respond promptly to housekeeping or facility needs as they arise.
- Deliver, assemble, and remove equipment such as tables, chairs, stanchions, and signage to ensure smooth events and cruise passenger flow.
- Participate in daily cruise operations as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Overall Responsibilities
- Engage with guests throughout the facilities with a positive and approachable demeanor.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service when interacting with passengers, crew members, coworkers, port officials, and the public.
- Contribute to a positive and efficient operational environment through clear communication and teamwork.
- Stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks including lifting items from ground to above shoulder level, climbing, bending, stooping, sitting, pushing, pulling, and tasks requiring manual dexterity.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education / Experience
Ability to read and understand written instructions and simple processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency. No experience required, though the preferred candidate will have one year of experience in housekeeping and event support and possess a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
Pay
The hiring range for this department is $40,768.00 – $45,200.21 annually.
Schedule
Work hours are Wednesday through Sunday, with some holidays as needed.

Retirement
Employees hired on or after October 5 2020 with the City of Norfolk Retirement System must contribute 5 % of salary to retirement (pre‑tax). Employees hired on or after January 1 2022 with the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) also contribute 5 % of salary (pre‑tax).
Tuition Assistance
Permanent full‑time, permanent part‑time, special‑project, and constitutional employees who have completed six months of continuous service may apply for tuition assistance for accredited institutions.
