About the Role

The Custodian provides custodial services at an assigned site or area to ensure an attractive, sanitary, and safe environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role performs a variety of special cleaning operations, oversees the preparation of facilities for classroom activities and campus events, supports other custodians, and ensures assignments are completed safely, properly, and in a timely manner.

This position reports to the Immediate Supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans assigned facilities and/or grounds (e.g., sweeps, mops, vacuums floors; dusts and cleans offices, classrooms, and other work areas; strips, restores, and polishes floors as scheduled; collects and removes waste; washes walls, windows, and doors).
  • Disinfects required surfaces and fixtures (e.g., urinals, toilets, lavatories, partitions, wastebaskets, trash cans) to maintain District sanitation standards.
  • Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g., cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops) to ensure availability of custodial items.
  • Monitors students and staff in and around work areas (e.g., halls, multipurpose rooms, lunchroom, restrooms, grounds) to prevent injuries and ensure site safety.
  • Participates in unit meetings and trainings to convey and/or gather information required to perform job functions.
  • Performs a variety of building emergency procedures as needed (e.g., snow removal, fire evacuation, emergency weather, lock-down plans) to ensure emergency procedures are followed effectively.
  • Performs minor maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture, and fixtures (e.g., changes vacuum cleaner belts, bags).
  • Performs summer maintenance and cleaning (e.g., stripping and waxing floors, cleaning carpets, cleaning/repairing/moving furniture) to prepare facilities for the school year.
  • Prepares the site for daily operations (e.g., opening gates, raising flags, sweeping/salting walkways) to ensure facilities are operational and hazard-free.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g., supply requisitions, safety inspections, work orders, inventory records, timesheets) to document activities and/or relay information to supervisor.
  • Replenishes classroom and restroom supplies (e.g., paper towels, toilet paper, soap) to ensure adequate quantities for daily use.
  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, vandalism, alarms) by taking appropriate action or notifying personnel for resolution.
  • Responds to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and/or visitors to provide information, take action, or direct to appropriate personnel.
  • Secures facilities and grounds (e.g., doors, gates, alarms, lights) to minimize property damage, equipment loss, and/or potential liability.
  • Supports other site maintenance staff (e.g., grounds, trades, event custodians) to complete site custodial activities safely and timely.
  • Transports tools, equipment, and supplies to ensure availability of materials at the job site.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Job-related experience is required.
  • Must pass a post-offer employment test assessing physical demands.
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance required.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Skills: Ability to perform single, technical tasks with potential need to upgrade skills. Specific skills include operating equipment and materials used in industrial maintenance, adhering to safety practices, and preparing/maintaining accurate records.
  • Knowledge: Ability to perform basic math (fractions, percents, ratios), read and follow instructions, and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Knowledge of industrial cleaning methods (floor and carpet), basic tools for minor repairs, and safety practices/procedures.
  • Abilities: Ability to schedule activities, meetings, or events; gather/collate data; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Flexibility to work with others, data, and equipment. Problem-solving to identify issues and select action plans. Adaptability to changing work priorities and meeting deadlines/schedules.

Working Conditions

  • Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.
  • Job requires 5% sitting, 75% walking, and 20% standing.
  • Performed under some temperature extremes and conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
