EV Charging Validation Engineer
About the role
We’re ALTEN Technology USA, an engineering company helping clients bring groundbreaking ideas to life—from advancing space exploration and life-saving medical devices to building autonomous electric vehicles. With 3,000+ experts across North America, we partner with leading companies in aerospace, medical devices, robotics, automotive, commercial vehicles, EVs, rail, and more. As part of the global ALTEN Group—57,000+ engineers in 30 countries—we deliver across the entire product development cycle, from consulting to full project outsourcing. When you join ALTEN Technology USA, you’ll collaborate on some of the world’s toughest engineering challenges, supported by mentorship, career growth opportunities, and comprehensive benefits. We take pride in fostering a culture where employees feel valued, supported, and inspired to grow. As a Validation Engineer within the Charging Systems Engineering group you will be working and validating the best and state of the art charging system including charge control HW and FW Controls, validating control interfaces between the charging system components, coming up with test plans to evaluate various charger HWs, and being a technical expert for charging supplier interactions. Actively participate in laying out test suites and plans for various charging system components of our L5 EV High Voltage Powertrain. Work cross-functionally with several amazing engineers to solve complex charging related HV and LV EE system problems by breaking them down into more solvable problems. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to understand root causes of failures, identify mitigation strategies, and incorporate learnings into new fleet chargers.
Responsibilities
- Execute verification and validation testing ↔ charger interoperability across various supplier DC charging systems.
- Develop and implement test cases derived from interoperability and conformance standards (e.g., CCS, ISO 15118, DIN 70121) in collaboration with Powertrain Engineering, Firmware, and Integration/Validation teams.
- Create structured test plans and maintain comprehensive test suites, ensuring clear documentation to support engineering design decisions.
- Configure, operate, and troubleshoot test equipment, including engineering tools (e.g., Vector CANoe, CANalyzer), power supplies, electronic loads, and charging test assets.
- Manage test infrastructure, including hardware configurations, equipment calibration, software versions, and test documentation.
- Investigate field issues by analyzing vehicle and charging logs (CAN, Ethernet), performing root cause analysis, validating fixes, and driving issues to closure.
- Support integration, commissioning, and supplier validation activities, requiring up to 50% travel to various field sites.
Qualifications
- 3–5 years of experience in EV charging systems, including charging session analysis and validation.
- Strong understanding of EV/EVSE charging fundamentals, interoperability, and vehicle-level validation.
- Solid knowledge of DC fast charging technologies and global standards such as SAE J1772, SAE J3400, DIN 70121, ISO 15118, IEC 61851.
- Experience analyzing communication protocols such as CAN, PLC, and serial interfaces using tools like CANalyzer, PCAN View, Wireshark, and terminal interfaces.
- Working knowledge of automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN, FlexRay, Ethernet, SPI, I2C).
- Experience working safely with high-voltage systems (up to ~500 VDC) and AC power systems (single- and three-phase).
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced development environment with strong collaboration and communication skills.
- BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Familiarity with industry testing and regulatory standards (SAE, UL, ISO, IEC, UN, GB/T, GTR).
- Experience in test fixture design and selection of test equipment.
- Knowledge of high-voltage and low-voltage PCB design.
- Strong documentation, reporting, and communication skills.
