Job Responsibilities
- Evaluate and analyze project plans and specifications to determine the overall estimated costs of a project.
- Calculate various statistical data such as quantity take-offs, material price lists, labor costs per man-hour, and equipment rates.
- Prepare detailed, accurate, and timely estimates for projects, including preparing bids and submitting proposals to clients.
- Consult with clients, vendors, and construction team members to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve potential issues in project logistics.
- Analyze subcontractor proposals and evaluate bids to ensure they cover the required scope of work.
- Maintain an updated database with current material and labor costs.
- Identify potential risks associated with project costs and propose mitigation strategies.
- Prepare cost analysis based on the architectural drawings, engineering estimates, materials required, and labor involved.
- Participate in bid handoffs and coordinate with the construction team to ensure all aspects of the project are in line with the estimate.
- Use specialized software to assist with the estimation process, such as CAD software for reading architectural drawings and cost estimation software.
- Conduct site visits to gather information necessary for estimates when necessary.
- Review design options and recommend best solutions based on cost, engineering quality, or availability of materials.
- Keep track of changes in the market that affect the cost of labor and materials, and adjust project estimates accordingly.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven experience as an estimator or in a similar role.
- Strong understanding of construction processes, materials, and equipment.
- Proficiency in estimating software such as PlanSwift, Bluebeam, or similar.
- Familiarity with CAD software and reading architectural/engineering drawings.
- Excellent numerical skills and an analytical mindset.
- Understanding of risk analysis and cost control.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects with varying deadlines.
- Knowledge of building codes, regulations, and compliance requirements.
- Experience with on-screen takeoff processes.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Professional certification (e.g., Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or similar) is preferred.
- A valid driver's license and willingness to visit job sites as needed.
