Estimator
About the Role
The Estimator is responsible for estimating the material, labor, and subcontractor costs for the installation of Projects ranging from $0 to $1,000,000+ in costs; and working with company leadership on the final pricing. A successful Estimator will maintain the target PROJECT BACKLOG VALUE while maintaining a high degree of ESTIMATING ACCURACY as measured by actual costs compared to estimated costs and achieving the assigned PROJECT SALES REVENUE GOAL by knowing market conditions. This position will report to the Operations Manager.
The MEP Estimator is responsible for independently preparing mechanical, HVAC, and/or plumbing estimates, technical proposals, cost models, and risk analyses for complex institutional and mission-critical projects.
Qualifications
- 3-5 years of MEP field experience (Mechanical, HVAC, or Plumbing) — experience does not need to be exclusively mechanical; strong plumbing or HVAC estimating experience is equally valuable
- Estimating experience preferred
- Strong ability to read and interpret contracts, drawings, and specifications
- Experience with mission-critical or complex mechanical projects strongly preferred
- Proficiency in Excel and estimating tools
- Strong analytical, mathematical, and critical-thinking skills
- Trade License preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Technical knowledge
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications
Responsibilities
- Lead estimating efforts on assigned projects from kickoff through proposal delivery
- Perform detailed take-offs across mechanical, piping, HVAC, and plumbing scopes
- Conduct cost modeling, labor analysis, system comparisons, and historical evaluations
- Develop detailed, professional proposal documents
- Assist in risk evaluation, contingency modeling, and value engineering
- Analyze plans, specifications, addenda, and coordination drawings
- Identify scope gaps, risk factors, and constructability issues
- Work with design/build teams on system selection, design-assist efforts, and feasibility reviews
- Solicit, review, and level subcontractor proposals
- Assist in procurement, vendor buyouts, and material pricing strategy
- Participate in internal and client-facing estimate reviews
- Provide technical insight to Business Development and Project Management teams
- Contribute to scheduling, phasing, and logistical planning
