About the role
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Estimator to join our growing civil construction team. This role is ideal for a driven professional looking to advance their career in heavy civil and underground utility construction while contributing to high-impact public and private infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will assist in estimating, project coordination, cost analysis, scheduling, and operational support for a wide variety of civil construction projects, including roadway improvements, underground utilities, storm drain systems, and electrical infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates for public and private civil construction projects
- Review construction plans, specifications, civil designs, bid documents, and project requirements
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for labor, equipment and materials
- Develop project pricing using current production rates, material costs, subcontractor quotes and field conditions
- Prepare full-cycle estimates for wet utility and less burdened civil construction projects
- Collaborate with the estimating team on larger, more complex site development projects
- Assemble complete bids, proposals and supporting documentation
- Assist with project management duties including scheduling, subcontractor coordination and budget tracking
- Support bidding efforts for hard bid projects, time-and-material contracts and Master Service Agreements
- Solicit quotes from subcontractors, vendors and suppliers
- Review subcontractor and supplier proposals for accuracy, completeness and alignment with project requirements
- Coordinate with project managers, the General Superintendent, sales leadership and estimating support staff
- Communicate directly with clients regarding project scope, pricing requirements and bid expectations
- Coordinate with field personnel to confirm production assumptions, construction methods and site conditions
- Conduct occasional field visits to gather project information and verify existing conditions
- Adjust production rates, quantities and cost assumptions based on project-specific requirements
- Maintain organized project documentation, estimating records, cost data and bid histories
- Track bid deadlines and manage multiple estimates simultaneously
- Ensure estimates, proposals and project deliverables meet company quality standards and submission deadlines
- Support project handoffs by communicating estimate assumptions, exclusions, pricing details and operational considerations
- Provide estimating and coordination support throughout preconstruction and project planning
Requirements
- Minimum of two years of civil construction estimating or project management experience
- Three or more years of overall heavy civil or underground utility construction experience preferred
- Strong understanding of underground utility construction methods and civil infrastructure
- Experience estimating wet utilities, off-site utilities, roadway work, paving, grading or site development
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, civil designs and bid documents
- Experience completing quantity takeoffs and pricing labor, equipment and materials
- Ability to independently complete full-cycle estimates for wet utility projects
- Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Excel and digital takeoff platforms
- Experience using estimating, project management or scheduling software
- Strong analytical, organizational and communication skills
- Ability to evaluate subcontractor and supplier proposals
- Self-motivated approach with the ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines simultaneously
- Strong customer service mindset and ability to communicate professionally with clients
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative estimating process
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to travel locally for occasional field visits
- Ability to safely gather and review field information when required
- Ability to work at a computer for extended periods
Project Experience
- Roadway and infrastructure improvements
- Mass grading and site development
- Asphalt paving and concrete work
- Residential and commercial off-site utility construction
- Water distribution systems using ductile iron, HDPE, PVC and steel
- Sewer systems involving PVC, HDPE, VCP, manholes and lift stations
- Storm drain systems involving RCP, RCB, HDPE, PVC and drainage structures
- Underground electrical and communication conduit systems
- Street lighting and utility infrastructure
- Power, gas, sewer, water and storm drain installations
- Large-diameter pipeline construction
Preferred Qualifications
- Five or more years of underground utility estimating or project management experience
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering or a related field
- Field experience as a project manager, superintendent, assistant superintendent, surveyor or owner's representative
- Experience working with residential developers, homebuilders and utility providers
- Experience with prevailing wage projects, certified payroll requirements or reimbursement-based infrastructure projects
- Civil engineering experience involving cost analysis, budgeting or constructability
- Familiarity with AGTEK
- Familiarity with HeavyBid or Hard Dollar
- Familiarity with Innate estimating software
- Familiarity with On-Screen Takeoff
- Familiarity with Vista by Viewpoint
- Familiarity with Bluebeam or Procore
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Experience with project scheduling software
