About the role

Laser North, a professional sheet metal and structural fabrication company, seeks an Estimator to join their team in Baraga, Michigan. All levels of experience are being considered and encouraged to apply. We are willing to train someone who is motivated to build a career in the manufacturing industry. At its core, this is a technical sales role. The Estimator exists to drive sustained business growth by turning opportunities into revenue—quoting quickly, pricing accurately, and following through until the work is won.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze project specifications to determine material, labor, and machinery costs.
  • Use manufacturing software to derive and create CAD data for projects.
  • Prepare accurate estimates and bids for fabricated metal parts and assemblies.
  • Turn opportunities into sales by delivering timely quotes, following up, answering questions, and tracking quotes through award.
  • Help customers understand our capabilities, materials, processes, and tolerances while recommending practical solutions.
  • Build strong customer relationships that lead to repeat, expanded, and referral business.
  • Communicate with customers (phone, email, video) to understand requirements, clarify technical details, and provide updates.
  • Serve as a point of contact throughout the quoting process and respond quickly to questions or changes.
  • Support awarded projects by tracking milestones, revisions, documentation, and customer requirements.
  • Coordinate with the Master Scheduler/Contract Coordinator on lead times, capacity, materials, purchase orders, terms, and scope changes.
  • Follow up with customers for feedback, questions, and issue resolution.
  • Provide technical support to customers and production as needed.

Requirements

  • A positive, professional attitude and relevant experience to succeed in the role.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A customer-first, sales-minded approach—you enjoy building relationships, you’re comfortable following up and asking for the business, and you take ownership of questions and issues until they’re resolved.
  • Strong organization and follow-through with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Willingness to work shoulder-to-shoulder with scheduling, contracts, and the shop floor—good estimates depend on good teamwork.
  • Metal manufacturing experience preferred; 3+ years is a plus.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office or equivalent.
  • Experience with SolidWorks®, AutoCAD®, or similar drafting software preferred.
