Position Summary

The Esports Program provides an opportunity for students to get involved and encourages community, competition and career skill building through its various programs and services. The Esports Program Director is responsible for administrative oversight of the program, including budget, personnel, risk management, team practice and competitive activities for approximately six competitive teams.

This position will have primary responsibility for all aspects of running an Esports program and Esports Lounge within the EMU. The position will provide primary day-to-day guidance, support, and counsel for the esports program grounded in best practices and principles of student development, and models of student leadership. This position will also represent the program across campus and the broader academic and gaming communities. This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule. Work is reviewed regularly by the Senior Associate Director of the EMU.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of experience with relevant technology in esports (such as gaming computers, broadcasting equipment, system management software, etc.)
  • One year of experience in personnel management including supervision, evaluation, and development of students, professional, or paraprofessional staff (or equivalent training/education).

Professional Competencies

  • General knowledge of gaming industry and at least one major esport game-associated industry.
  • Knowledge of social media and community tools such as Discord, Twitch, and X.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, in support of an inclusive and welcoming environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service skills.
  • Strong presentation and public relations skills; ability to give public presentations and adjust communication to appropriate audiences.
  • Skill/ability in project management.
  • Demonstrated expertise with broadcast production.
  • Ability to plan and execute successful events.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of experience advising/coaching students, volunteers, or participants.
  • One year of experience managing an organizational budget, including point of sale.
  • One year space/lounge management experience including rentals and special events.
  • One year general purchasing, inventory, and upkeep of equipment and technology.
  • Two years of esports management experience at the collegiate or professional level.
  • Experience with revenue generation such as working with sponsorships and soliciting donations.
  • Experience with strategic planning, development and implementation.
  • Master’s Degree.

The Erb Memorial Union (EMU) is a department of the Division of Student Life. The EMU is a multifaceted auxiliary service that employs over 90 professional staff and 400 student staff, and serves over 15 thousand daily users during the academic year. The EMU welcomes students, faculty, staff, the community and visitors to campus, and its mission is to provide learning experiences and opportunities for personal growth in an open, inclusive, and resource-rich community where students and staff collaborate to inspire and sustain extraordinary programs and services that promote diversity and social interaction. The EMU is student centered and is operated in collaboration with a student Board, who are actively involved in determining the character and scope of the department and approve the budget recommendations of all EMU services and programs.
