ESOL, Newcomer-Middle (2026-2027 School Year)

Position Function: The Middle School ESOL teacher, under the direction of their principal, will provide tailored instruction of foundational skills in English to a diverse, multi-leveled, and multi-aged group of students who have had limited or no schooling as well as low proficiency levels in the English Language and Literacy domains. The teacher is culturally proficient, self-motivated, demonstrates a passion for continuous learning, and has the ability to facilitate a successful learning community for English Language Learners (ELLs).

Responsibilities

  • Embrace and incorporate the diversity and traditions of languages and cultures of students from diverse backgrounds
  • Collaborate and communicate with staff to meet the educational needs of students
  • Create, administer, and grade tests/assessments to evaluate student progress
  • Develop effective lesson plans reflecting alignment to grade-level state standards, ESOL evidence-based strategies, and language objectives to guide daily instruction
  • Provide direct instruction and facilitate student learning using current best practices and strategies throughout content areas
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students, parents, and peers as appropriate
  • Establish and enforce rules and procedures to maintain classroom order and create a productive learning environment
  • Develop and assist classroom staff members to incorporate effective listening, speaking, reading, and writing strategies into all content areas
  • Provide direct instruction and support to ELLs through coaching, co-teaching, observing, and feedback while ensuring ongoing communication and support of core instruction
  • Administer state and district screeners and assessments to ELL students as needed
  • Ensure collaboration and push-in support occur within the classroom delivery model, working with para-educators, SPED, and/or the ESOL team
  • Participate in faculty and professional meetings, district trainings, and teacher workshops
  • Assist with additional duties as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

  • Ability to use SMART boards and iPads, as well as basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machines
  • Comply with USD 259's guidelines for equipment use
  • Limited travel between schools and central offices may be required
  • Work in a school environment and respond rapidly in emergency situations
  • Strong organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to share and obtain information
  • Effectively use Microsoft Outlook and the student information system
  • Perform as an effective team player
  • Plan, organize, make decisions, and prioritize work to meet daily demands
  • Exhibit professionalism, confidentiality, and a positive attitude
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy
  • Adhere to professional dress and appearance standards
  • Understand and align with the district’s mission, purpose, goals, and the role of every employee in achieving them

Qualifications

  • KS Secondary teaching certificate
  • ESOL endorsement
  • 1 year prior teaching experience preferred with ESOL students

Interrelations

  • Contact with personnel within the district, customers, and vendors
  • Work under the direct supervision of the department supervisor to complete day-to-day tasks
  • Work with a diverse population requiring tact and diplomacy
  • Understand and respond appropriately to customer needs while maintaining a positive attitude
  • Interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide responsive customer service

Employee Punctuality and Appearance: Employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work scheduled hours unless approved leave is obtained. Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval. All employees must report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for their position.
