About the Role

The role of the ESL Teacher is to facilitate a successful implementation of the ESL curriculum by planning a variety of activities and exercises to help students develop their English language skills. The goal is to provide targeted support and instruction that develops the reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills of all English Language Learners (ELLs). The ESL Teacher is to be the advocate for ELLs, supporting the student's academic progress, and helping families gain understanding of school expectations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Valid New Jersey Teacher of ESL certification or eligibility (ESL Teacher).
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
  • Understand the requirement to maintain confidentiality concerning charter school-related matters.

  • Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push objects or materials.
  • Requires the ability to work in noisy and crowded environments.
  • Occasionally requires stooping, bending, or reaching.
  • Requires some traveling.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Pursue the vision and execute the mission of iLearn Schools Inc.
  • Support and promote board and administrative initiatives and decisions.
  • Possess an understanding of the charter school renewal process and assist with the process as needed.
  • Display the highest ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel and outside agencies associated with the charter school.
  • Maintain professional competence and continuous improvement through professional growth.
  • Adhere to federal statutes and regulations, New Jersey school law, New Jersey Department of Education rules and regulations, iLearn Schools Inc. policies, procedures and contractual obligations.
  • Take immediate action and notify appropriate personnel concerning any evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or anabolic steroids.
  • Follow school affirmative action procedures.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge and understanding of the charter school rules and regulations.
  • Protect confidentiality of records and information about staff or students and use discretion when sharing such information within legal confines.
  • Maintain proper phone etiquette and practice discretion when communicating with parents or the community.
  • Issue electronic/paper communications that are written with appropriate language, phrases and punctuation. Use of slang or text language is not acceptable.
  • Assist in the collection of data for local, county, state or federal reports.
  • Possess and understand the school emergency response plan.
  • Attend school sponsored events as requested/contracted.
  • Work to achieve state core curriculum content standards charter school goals and objectives by promoting active learning in the classroom using board-adopted curriculum and other appropriate learning activities for English Language Learners (ELL).
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide opportunities for individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Sets specific objectives in lesson preparation and weekly lesson plans and carries through presentation to effectively achieve these objectives.
  • Participate in the assessment of the English proficiency of pupils whose native language is other than English; helps to identify pupils eligible for bilingual education and/or English Language Learner programs or other services designed to improve English language proficiency.
  • Assess pupil academic progress, English proficiency and personal growth toward stated objectives of instruction. Assess annually to determine pupils ready to exit the ENL program.
  • Maintain records of pupils' educational progress and summarizes these marks for reporting purposes.
  • Identify academic and support services needs of ELLs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and resolving learning problems.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a classroom climate conducive to learning for English Language Learners (ELL).
  • Budget class time effectively.
  • Devise written and oral assignments and assessments that require analytical and critical thinking as well as the reproduction of facts.
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
  • Perform any other duties within the scope of his/her employment and certification that may be assigned.
