About the role

The English Language Acquisition Teacher facilitates the development of English proficiency in listening, understanding, speaking, reading, and writing to meet Pennsylvania Academic and TESOL standards. They promote a culturally understanding environment and assist in the positive psychosocial adjustment of students.

Responsibilities

  • Complies with District policies and procedures in student identification and placement.
  • Teaches English language communication skills using District-adopted curriculum and Sheltered English Approach.
  • Completes written lesson plans and implements appropriate instructional practices based on second language acquisition theory.
  • Correlates classroom objectives with English Language Acquisition Program Goals, TESOL Standards, and Pennsylvania Academic Standards.
  • Affords assessments and monitors student progress towards meeting academic standards using various forms of assessment.
  • Maintains accurate student records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Develops instructional activities for the English Language Acquisition instructional assistant and meets with them regularly.
  • Communicates student progress and adjustment to the new educational setting to parents.
  • Monitors progress of mainstreamed students for one year following exit testing.
  • Maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to students' maturity and interests.
  • Works with students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required.
  • Maintains classroom procedures to ensure a conducive learning atmosphere and maintains order in the classroom.
  • Assists administration in implementing policies and rules governing student conduct.
  • Maintains professional competence through ongoing training and development.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • PA Teaching Certificate; English Second Language Program Specialist Certificate (preferred)
  • Fluency in Spanish (preferred)
