About the Role

Teaches one or more subjects to students in a public secondary school.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs students through lectures, demonstrations, and audiovisual aids.
  • Prepares course objectives and outlines following curriculum guidelines or state, district, and school requirements.
  • Assigns lessons and corrects homework.
  • Administers tests, records results, and issues reports to inform parents of student progress.
  • Maintains attendance records and classroom discipline.
  • Meets with parents to discuss student progress and problems.
  • Participates in faculty meetings, professional development, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
  • May sponsor student activities or organizations, supervise co-curricular events, serve on school/district committees, or collaborate with colleagues to improve instruction and school climate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Completion of a fifth-year college or university teaching credential program.
  • Valid California Secondary Credential authorizing teaching in the assigned subject area.
  • English Learner Authorization.
  • Valid California Driver’s License.

Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents, and respond effectively to sensitive inquiries.
  • Ability to write lesson plans, speeches, and articles using original or innovative techniques.
  • Strong presentation skills for classroom instruction.
  • Proficiency in mathematical concepts (fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions) for practical application.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, GroupWise) for clerical and administrative tasks.
  • Ability to create a supportive classroom atmosphere, communicate warmly with students, and maintain professional rapport with staff and parents.
  • Strong organizational skills for classroom activities, record-keeping, and meeting deadlines.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, talk, and hear; frequently required to sit.
  • Occasionally required to use hands for fine motor tasks, reach with arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must lift and/or move up to 10 pounds regularly, up to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Requires close, distance, and peripheral vision, as well as the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment is typically moderate in noise level.
