The Madison Metropolitan School District is the second largest in Wisconsin, serving over 25,000 students from diverse backgrounds. Essential Duties

  • Use standards (CCSS, SELS, Language) to identify common learning targets that represent what all students should know, do, and understand as a result of instruction.
  • Use knowledge of students’ background, interests, style, culture, language, individual needs, and assessment data to inform planning.
  • Develop daily and weekly plans to support student growth toward mastery of standards.
  • Develop common year-long/course plans that identify essential questions and resources to support student learning.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to students.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations to build engagement, collaboration, and independence with complex tasks.
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests.
  • Provide daily opportunities for students to describe reasoning, share explanations, make conjectures, justify conclusions, argue from evidence, and negotiate meaning.
  • Define and plan formative assessments to show evidence of learning.
  • Use multiple ways to check for student understanding and clarify, reteach, and/or make adjustments to instruction based on gathered information.
  • Provide meaningful feedback that reinforces effort, provides recognition, and promotes student involvement and progress in learning.
  • Provide opportunities for teacher-to-student, student-to-student, and student-to-teacher feedback both orally and in writing.
  • Analyze data and adjust instruction based on student achievement, observation, and teacher practice data.
  • Establish rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among students.
  • Meet with parents/guardians to discuss student progress and determine priorities and resource needs.
  • Collaborate with all staff in support of student learning, including team planning and co-teaching.

Job Specific Duties

  • Serve as a bilingual classroom teacher as part of the District’s bilingual and English Language Learner (EL) programs.
  • Assist in the development of curriculum for bilingual and ESL instruction in the District.
  • Provide classroom instruction to students in bilingual classrooms.
  • Provide additional support and leadership to bilingual and ESL education programs as requested.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree. Official transcripts are required for formal employment.
  • Native-like fluency in Hmong, Spanish, and English. For Bilingual Resource Teacher and Dual Language Immersion positions, a Spanish/Hmong language proficiency assessment is required.
  • Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) teaching license in one of the following:
    • High School Core content (Math, Science, English, Language Arts, or Social Studies) with Bilingual/Bi-Cultural ESL required; Bilingual preferred
    • Middle School Regular Education Grades 1–8 or Elementary/Middle Education or Core content (Math, Science, English, Language Arts, or Social Studies) with Bilingual/Bi-Cultural ESL required; Bilingual preferred
    • Elementary School Regular Education inclusive of elementary grade levels (e.g., PK–3, K–6, 1–8, EC–MA, etc.) with Bilingual/Bi-Cultural ESL required; Bilingual preferred
  • Applications are considered on a rolling basis. MMSD will consider applicants who are fully licensed before considering applicants who are not yet licensed.
  • If you do not already have an active Wisconsin teaching license, you must obtain and maintain the necessary license(s) for the position. An application must be on file within 30 days of starting employment; failure to do so will result in contract voiding.
  • The district does not provide financial support for required certification programs or endorse specific certification pathways.
  • An unlicensed candidate can be considered but must be hired by a school district to apply for a One-Year License with Stipulations with DPI.

  • Ability to work in generally safe and comfortable indoor environments with minimal exposure to environmental risks.
  • Ability to perform work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year, including inclement weather, spaces without air conditioning, and areas with fluctuating temperatures.
