Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector

Job Summary

Performs intermediate technical work inspecting earth disturbance activities for code compliance, providing advice and information relating to erosion control, preparing and maintaining records and files, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Work Hours

Work hours for this position are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with a 1 hour for lunch.

Examples of Duties

• Inspects individual new construction lots and overall developments sites ensuring compliance with Westfield's Erosion and Sediment Control Ordinance.
• Reviews construction plans and applications for erosion and sediment control.
• Communicates with utilities, developers, builders, contractors and residents regarding ordinance violations.
• Tracks statistical data for input into databases.
• Patrols City streets to ensure work performed in the City right-of-way has been approved and permitted, as needed.
• Affords assistance to Streets division with snow and ice removal.
• Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• General knowledge of erosion and sediment control standards and regulations, wetland ordinances and flood plain management regulations and related laws and ordinances;
• Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and compare them to the construction in process;
• Ability to work with large and small equipment, along with various tools;
• Ability to establish satisfactory working relationships, firmness and tact in enforcing codes and ordinances;
• Ability to contact owners, contractors, and the public.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED;
• Moderate experience in enforcing environmental codes, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
• Moderate experience in public speaking.

Physical Requirements

• Regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force;
• Frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force;
• Occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force;
• Work regularly requires walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions;
• Frequent sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling;
• Pushing or pulling;
• Frequent standing, climbing or balancing;
• Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly;
• Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound;
• Preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities;
• Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration and occasionally exposure to moving mechanical parts and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals;
• Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements

• Valid driver's license in the State of Indiana.
• May require a Class B CDL.
• Possess or have the ability to obtain Sediment and Erosion Control Certification and Training.
