Ernakovich Lab Technician

About the role

Under the supervision of lab manager(s) and research staff, the technician will analyze microbial communities and biogeochemical properties of permafrost soil samples. The role also includes assisting with lab maintenance tasks such as chemical inventory management, dishwashing, and hazardous waste disposal. Training will be provided for lab-specific protocols, including DNA extraction, PCR amplification, enzyme assays, foreign soil protocols, and biogeochemical soil characterization.

Responsibilities

• Microbial Soil Assays (60%)
  • DNA Extraction
  • PCR and Gel Electrophoresis
  • Enzyme Assays
• Lab Maintenance (30%)
  • Cleaning and dishwashing
  • Autoclaving labware and foreign soil waste
  • Updating chemical inventory and properly disposing of chemical waste
• Lab Notebook (10%)
  • Keep a complete and organized lab notebook
  • Communicate results and issues promptly and clearly with lab manager/research staff
  • Update lab protocols as needed
